I am building up a 408W stroker and need a some advise on parts to complete the build. I have a 94-97 roller block that cleaned up at .030 over and ordered an Eagle forged rotating assembly

Going with AFR 205 heads, likely an airgap or Weiand Stealth intake. Running a T5 with 3:73 rear gears.

So what cam will best fit this combo? I just want to build a strong street motor and maybe see 1/4 mile pass every now and then. I would like to see 400-450 at the crank (just for bragging rights) but I don't really have a set HP number to achieve. I do have a 4100 carb (1.08 venturi) that I may rebuild and use but that is still up in the air.

So hit me with your cam recommendations and even what flywheel, intake, carb for this build. Help me spend my money :thu

I'll save the exact part advice for the guys with actual 408 builds to use as reference but I will tell you that hitting your h.p. goal will not be a problem provided you have a decent CR. With 205s you have the capability of 500 or more depending how crazy you want to get.

I got this...

maybe not, I'm only good about breaking motors.

Have you thought about going with a custom cam? They are a little more money but are designed specifically for your engine combination and they are usually ground more accurately then off the shelf cams. Most good cam designers will send the cam back if it does not check out spec wise and get it reground so it specs out perfectly. A lot of off the shelf cams can come ground a few degrees off. OTS cams are usually going to be a compromise for all but the most basic engine builds.

If you do decided to go with an off the shelf cam a Lunati Voodoo part # 61011 or part # 61012 would be a pretty good fit for your goals. Part #61011 will make around 430hp at the crank and peak a little after 5000 rpms while part #61012 will make a little north of 450hp at the crank and should peak around 5500 rpms. The engine is designed assuming a 10:1 compression ratio, RPM Air Gap intake, Holley 950HP or a Mighty Demon 750 carb and at least 1.75" primary long tube headers. These are the parts that I would use and the compression I would shoot for with these cams.

I am not opposed to a custom cam as long as it doesnt drive the price to the heavens. Who should I look at for a custom cam? Ed Curtis?

Also, with the AFR heads and pistons in that kit, I should be at 10.7:1 compression.

I used Ed Curtis and I was happy with the service, turnaround, and the final product. Ed knows AFR heads quite well and would be a good choice. Ed's prices are $329 for a hydro roller SADI cored cam and $379 for a billet core hydro roller. Personally I would spend the little extra money and get the billet core; they are rigid and do not flex like a SADI core flexes. This allows for more accurate valve operation and timing.

Don't forget to add another 3cc's to the valve relief volume of your pistons for the ring lands; this will bring your actual compression ratio a little lower. If you are going to end up with a smallish cam and a higher compression ratio I would definitely go custom so Ed or whoever can manipulated the valve timing to bleed some cylinder pressure off.
