Every summer, we break something expensive...

I was sitting here uploading pictures when I came across a couple I had taken over the summer. For the past few summers, I've been helping my next door neighbor with his pulling tractor, and lately, it hasn't been all that much fun. I posted about our mishaps http://www.stangfix.com/testforum2/index.php/topic,2624.msg26485.html#msg26485.

The 2010 season started out a lot like 2009, except it was 100* and tropical outside, and the tractor had already sprung a headgasket leak during a test run (just dripping water outside of the block, thankfully). After a nice drive along the river, we unloaded everything, got signed in, etc, etc. Fired it up and got it warmed up and it was running GOOOD. Aside from few minor tweaks, the engine was essentially the same as last year and it sounded HUNGRY. :thu

Then it was Richard's turn at the sled:

RPMs are coming up, turbo hasn't really started to wind up. As the turbo started to wind up and the smoke turned black, there was a *pop* and then:

Got a pull of...wait for it, 3 feet. :hide Honestly, I'm not sure how it got that far as it has a funny car clutch and IIRC it wasn't spinning enough RPMs to engage before the engine let go. We took a quick peek under the side shields and immediately winched it up on the trailer (correctly double blocked the cable this time, worked like a charm. :thu )

A couple days later, we did a leakdown test. Cylinder #1? OK. #2, 3, 4, and #5? Perfect! Pressurized #6 and heard air wooshing into the oil pan. Checked the data logs and everything looked cool enough that it should have lived. :wtf IT'S THE *EXACT* SAME THING AS LAST YEAR?! Richard is a pretty quiet fella and even he was F***king swearing at it. Fast forward to today and we're still not sure what caused it to melt a hole in #6 piston *again* but the bore is now a lot smaller and it's gonna be air-cooled. At least it won't leak water or rust the engine anymore. :yah :hide
