expansion valve insulation?

I was at a show this weekend, and a knowledgeable fellow mustanger pointed out that my a/c expansion valve is bare. He showed me on his car that the expansion valve on the firewall on his car is insulated with this sticky black tape that he called "tire tape". It looked like a big sticky blob of black stuff, sort of like black :nick. I have not noticed this before, but I can say I have looked at many a/c cars. Should this be insulated? If so, with what? If someone has a pic of the valve properly insulated, that would be great.

It should be insulated with black sticky tape. I dont have a concours photo but it does need to be insulated. Most other cars are.

He may have been saying tar tape. The pronunciation is the same, isn't it? :eek
If it's what I'm thinking of it's just cork soaked in tar or asphalt. It's also called cork tape.

that is funny. I am sure that he did say "tar" and not "tire" tape. I am a native Texan, and the drawl does not usually get by me.

I have heard it called "sticky" tape. Think of 3" wide roll of black tape thats very thick, heavy VERY sticky. Kind've like strip caulk I guess you might say. I think it is tar or creosult based.
