Expired Illinois plates

So the story is that I'm buying my Mother-inlaw's Focus. She is in Chicago and I my wife and I are flying there Friday annd then driving it home to California. My nephew picked up the car today to check it out before our long drive. He calls and says the Illinois sticker/plates are expired and that he will not drive it any more (no where near the MIL's place).

So what's involved in getting renewed sticker/plates in illinois. The car will be registered in CA whne we get it here but we need to drive it across country.

When I did this, I went to the local DMV/tax office, and got 1 week temporary plates. I flew to where the car was, mounted the plates and drove home.

I'm sure you're cringing when thinking of going to the Ca DMV office, aren't you?

It usually takes a bill of sale to do a temp. tag plus proof of ins......at least in Fl now.

As far as I know, Illinois doesn't sell temporary plates. Last time we bought a car in IL, they still sold 'trip tickets' that were good for 48 hours. That was fine for my purposes since it's only a 9 hour drive, but that might not get you back to CA. :rulz

Most things like that.....as in Fl. also, are good for one time use, from point a to point b.....no matter where those two points start and stop. Plus ins. coverage.

Fl. has two temps...one for new car from dealer purchase and one for private party purchase which is like the trip ticket type.
