F350 steering issues

I have a 03 F350 v10 when driving it down the road it will start to pull one way then it feels like the steering starts to build up pressure on pulling one way. Then all of a sudden it lets loose and starts violently shaking throwing the truck all over the road. Any ideas what it could be? some times it drives just fine and no issues. truck has 165,000 miles

Could be your tires. Swap them front to rear and see if the problem in the steering goes away.

4x4? If so, check your front axle joints. If your hubs are sticking or locked on and you have a bad joint, it'll do crazy stuff.

Sounds just like my old 71 Bronco. Front drive shaft u joints are shot.

It probably has to do with the condition of the road itself.Does it occure when the road has signs of rutting ??
Something up front has a bit of too much play.
Does your tires up front shows some usual tirewear ??
Maybe the upper joint (if mounted or do you have mcpherson suspension ) has some play.
Check the steering components too.
A little play have some major issues as a result.

It is a 4x4. i have only used the 4 wheel drive once when i bought the truck in june. i put about 1k miles on it before it started acting goofy. It usually does it after i make a turn. right turn or left it does the same thing. I have to baby it when turning or it will go crazy right after i straighten the wheel. There is some play in the wheel but its not real bad. I dont think its the road and the tires look like they are new with no unusual wear. I was thinking maybe it was the u joints. I tried pulling the wheels off to check the u joints out but they are stuck fast to the brake rotor. I gave up after a hour of trying to get it off. if i get time tomorrow ill try again

Easy way to check them is to jack the front end up and turn the wheels all the way in one direction and try to spin the tire. If the hub is stuck on or locked on, the u-joint bind and pop as you spin the wheel.

It took me forever to figure out that the front U joints on my Bronco were shot. I checked all kinds of things, including moving the tire and steering. Even had a local mechanic friend look at it. I finally took the front axles out, that was when I saw that the U joints were immovable by hand. I was one happy camper to get that fixed! Damn truck kept wanting to steer into oncoming traffic...all of a sudden. You could not drive that thing without paying close attention to the wheel. Afterwards, it drove like a normal truck.
