During my trek back to Southeastern South Dakota, I got some time to visit the home my great great grandfather, Carl Carlson homesteaded in the late 1800's. My great grandfather, grandfather and mother were all born on the property, and my cousin presently occupies it. My mother remembers the day her dad installed a flish toilet in the house. Woohoo!

here's a pic.

I also got a picture from my great aunt (94) of my Great grandfather, his sister, wife, my grandmother (infant) and her older sister that was taken in 1911....

My mother is headed to Norway next month to visit 'da fatherland' and visit distant relatives (whom I visited back in 2004). The coolest part of that trip was I walked away with a family history book that's written in Norwegian and it has the US family info in it (courtesy of my mother's cousin). My wife and son could not believe that their names were in it..... priceless indeed!

Ever been in Scottsbluff, NE? Beautiful town, thriving port city on the Platte River. At least that's what we tease my Dad with about the town of his birth and upbringing.

Centerville, South Dakota. Most of my mom's side of the family live in those towns. My Dad's side are the city folk and live in the metropolis of Sioux Falls.

I also have a cousins that live in Wagner (he's the postmaster there), Aberdeen. I have a cousin that lives on a 3500 acre farm near Adrian, Minn and a couple that live in Sibley, Iowa. I also have several cousins that live down in Kansas somewhere but they aren't allowed to visit us much - they can't handle their alcohol well......

A flish toilet is almost like a flush toilet but can easily flush an XXL potato also.

Didn't anyone ever teach you that you're supposed to chew the potatoes before swallowing??? Good grief that has to hurt comin' out!!! :scar

Now I grew up west river (ie...west of the Missouri River) around the Black Hills, and we had flush toilets and color tv. :craz

Yep, been thru all those areas when I was younger. My grandfather knew every farm pond and lake from Kansas to 50 miles into Canada so we fished and hunted everywhere. It was no big deal doing all the hunting and such when I was a kid. Then stationed in Wichita Ks, for a year when I first got in the AF, I wondered if I would ever leave the area. I do not miss the white stuff in the cooler months.

Boring 8th generation Californikator here.......Geez, that means my kids are 9th? Is my math correct :craz

Yep. The way my herniated discs in my back react to the cold, I could do about 30 min. in that and then it is laid up for 2 days with little to no movement. Really sucked when the kids were young and wanted to go north in Az. to play in the snow. I spent many weekends laid up so they could have fun but it was worth it. Now, I will avoid it all I can.....
