FE Crankshaft Pulley Removal

I'm trying to remove the crankshaft pulley on my 428 and I'm not having much luck. On all of my previous small blocks, the pulley just falls right off once you remove the bolts holding it in (after a whack or two with a rubber mallet). On my 428 though, I have the three bolts off but the pulley is not falling. I have the replacement pulley already (adding power steering so I needed the extra rib) and it doesn't appear that this pulley is any different. Is there any special way to remove the crankshaft pulley on FE motors?

...Or am I just an idiot who is getting beat by the good 'ol "rust glue"?
:stu

I just bought a balancer and pulley for my 428. The 3 bolts are all that hold them together. It is a tight tolerance between the balancer and pulley.

So on the plus side, I'm not crazy and it does come off without having to remove the dampener bolt. :yah

On the down side, I'm currently being beaten by rust and paint. :nut

Is your pulley a 2 groove pulley? If so, did the two sheeves separate or were they one piece?

Well, I figured out what happened. I had a 428 PI balancer on the motor instead of the correct SCJ balancer. It appears the PO used a PI balancer and one rib pulley and had the entire motor balanced with that setup. A PI balancer uses the dampener bolt to retain any additional pulleys (the PI balancer has one pulley rib built into it) which is why I couldn't get it off. Now on to figuring out what the hell I'm going to do about adding the extra rib on a motor balanced to a specific non-correct setup...::sigh::

Electric water pump and modify power steering pump mounts?

It appears everything will line up fine. It's more so an issue of what the added weight of a 2 rib pulley vs the drilled 1 rib pulley that is on there right now is going to do to the balance of the motor. I'm going to have to go talk to a machine shop or someone who understands balancing a motor better than I do.

Thought that was you on the 428 site.

I don't think a pulley would upset the balance. Its round and balanced itself. Kinda like adding a hubcap to a balanced wheel. Not sure but it makes sense to me.

For what its worth mine was balanced without the pulley. I had the same thought you are having but figured if the pulley was round and in good condition it should be fine.

Upon closer inspection what I thought were drill outs in the pulley like you would traditionally find on a crankshaft actually appear to be in the cast.
