There is over a foot of ice except on the edges of most lakes around here, I was probably 10-15 feet away from the bank walking where it had been covered with snow when bloop, down I went,I was able to throw my arms out and catch myself on the edge so I didn't go under, It broke off a couple of times and my buddy had thrown me a floatation cushion and then a rope I had taken along today so I really didn't panic too bad, instant almost burning cold. Snowmobile boots full of water and wet carhart coveralls are very heavy! Trashed my cell phone and billfold.

That sucks....but I collect those trashed green paper things with Presidents pics on them....just send them my way...I will deal with the water log problem.

Next time....send a friend first..... That is what my Grandfather always said and did....and he never ice fished alone and never fell in.

That was the first time I have fallen in where it was more than a couple of feet deep. Kind of an uneasy feeling hanging onto the edge with your feet dangling.

Consider yourself lucky. Two weeks ago one of my Canadian friends was clearing snow on one of the big lakes we fish in order to establish an ice road for a gold mining company and he broke through the ice.

He was in a single man snow cat with blade on the front, like something you see on the ski slopes. He was in about 80 feet of water and went to the bottom with it.

He always joked about moving heavy equipment over the ice and said that if you hear it cracking all you can do is ride it to the bottom.

At least he died loving what he enjoyed doing.

Glad you had someone with you and you are okay.

That is really sad---I never really thought that much about it but we went back today (not on the ice) and I never realized I was out as far as I was--near 20 feet from the bank---I was never really in panic mode but I was lucky someone was there---I rarely go ice fishing alone though.
