FG Hood

On my 67 FB i am installing a FG hood with OEM hinges (refurbished) and light duty springs........

When i close the hood it sits high at the back (over the hinges). You have to press down on it for it to go all the way home. It goes down about 1/2" when you press down on it.

Is this due to the lack of weight in the FG hood or is it the same on all hoods? Or do i need new hinges?

It the same on both sides.

Johnny

Re-seat the hinges by loosening up the fender apron bolts, raise the hood all the way, and then tighten the bolts. This may be a tw0-person job.

Johnny, the way I do it is if your engine is out I climb inside loosen the hinge and let the hood go down where it belongs, then tighten it. I also mark the hinge with tape so I can see how far I moved it. Rich.

I dont have a problem adjusting the hinge height.

Let me explain a little more.....

If i adjust the hinges(and tighten the fender bolts) so when i open and close the hood it sits level with the cowl and THEN with the hood closed if I push down on the hood lightly it drops by a further 1/2". So it ends up sitting too low.
Then if I adjust the hinges so that it sits too high after closing the hood, then push down on it, it sits level.

So essentially......Every time i open and close the hood i will have to push it down slightly over the hinges to get it to sit right. Is this normal or are my hinges junk?

My logic tells me that due to the weight of the original steel hood this problem would not occur.

I'll take some pics tomorrow.

That is the same problem I was having with the right hinge, the left side was fine. We could open and shut the hood a dozen times and the left side would always line up fine. But the right side we has to push it down. Like I said before, just get inside and drop the hinge. It is possible you could have a wore out hinge. When you add a hinge spring you are pre loading it . Another way to tell is take both springs off, then open and shut it and see what it does. Rich.

Do you have the hood bumpers on the fenders in place?

I do it like Rich described.

You can also lift the hood up and use the hood as a lever to lower the rear of the hinge (while slightly loose of course). It will most likely move that side of the hood rearward also.
You can fix that by moving the hood forward on the hinge.

Be very careful doing this. It is possible to overdo it and hit the fender with the hood. If your engine is out I recommend the other method.

Johnny M,
Personally between you and I, I'd highly suggest you simply fly me out to Ireland on Playboy airlines, Isle seat, row 4 and I'm sure I can resolve your hood issues.

Craig, I'll send the playboy Limo and 6 Playboy bunnies, will that be enough?

Ok...I already installed the rearward hood bumpers but the hood is not even resting on them. I was thinking about getting some adjustable bump stops and installing them instead. I could set them at the right height and the hood should nearly "lever" on them when closing and set the hood at the correct height.

Late last night i was also thinking this issue might be caused by my refurbiushment job. Before i worked on the the hinges they were loose as hell. So I got the gas and the BFH out and tightened all the rivets up. They are all very stiff now...Maybe i need to grease them up and work them a little. (that sentence could easily be found in a porno :bowdown)

If i cant sort it out..........I would rather set the hood height too high after closing and have to manually push it down. Otherwise setting it high to be in line after closing will look like ass if it drops while driving.

Rich,
Have you overcome the problem yet?

Re: FG Hood - Update

Thanks Dennis.
She is lubed to the Max now.......

I lashed some multi puprose grease on the hinges and opened/closed the hood about 50 times...seems to have solved the problem on one side but still getting it slightly on the other.

It will prob work itself out over time.

it must be late where you are?

Johnny, The hood fits fine, It just takes some fine tuning to get it right, as a last resort go with a prop rod and it will solve all your problems. Rich.

Thanks Rich.

Do you sell the prop rod kits wihtout the hinges?

Johnny, yes we do, we have a very nice stainless steel one with all the parts to go with it. I don't think it is on our website but I can get you a picture of it if you like. Rich.

Rich,
That'd be great......can you send me pics and a price. I am going to get one of those rear end brakes kits also.

There's the prop rod pics. I will have to look up the price on it but at least you have the pics.

This is often a sign of bad hinges, and I have the exact same problem with my 70. My guess is the pressed rivets have worked loose and caused some slop on the hinges. You may be able to open the hood fully, then pull it down enough for the hood to move and while doing so watch the hinges. You may be able to observe the slop.

I have already tightened up all the rivets with heat and a BFH. I think my problem is due to the lack of weight in the FG hood that is stopping the passenger side hinge from fully closing.
