Finally working on the truck

After who knows how many years I started turning the wrenches on the '76 f250. Blew an intake or head gasket about 5 years ago and never started 'cause I wanted to pull the engine/tranny and freshen it up. I'm also gonna have it painted. I'm gonna have to cut the exhaust but I can tell you one thing. Separating the engine (460) from the tranny in the truck is gonna be a bear due to how far back it sits. It's also gonna be a chore getting the engine out. I'll have to get the hoist about a foot and a half off the ground to get the engine to clear the rad support. This one might require the use of the backhoe. Once it's out I'll start on all the chrome and moulding removal.

Can't you dissamble the front grill , hoodlock support and eventually the headlights to get more clearence when pulling the engine ? :confu

If you had one of these real man trucks, you could remove the entire front clip making the motor pull pretty darn easy.

Radiator support ties into both fenders and frame. If I'm going that far it might as well be a frame off restoration. That's not really what I have in mind since it will still be used as a truck. I'll get some pics.

Were they made that way because you had to work on them really often? :yah

Looks like a "Sanford & Son" special to me.

Duane the front fenders, inner fenders and radiator support can indeed come out by unbolting them. This leaves the whole engine exposed. It just doesn't come apart as a complete assembly (IIRC), like a Chevy/GMC does (see above reply to Craig!).

Yeah, looked it over real well to see what would be involved. If I go that route though there is nothing keeping me from doing a frame-off resto considering I'll be removing the bed anyway. That is not something I plan on getting into since it will still be a TRUCK. Now, once I get the engine out and get started on the bay I may change my mind but I really hope not. Kind of a crazy story about the truck. It was my wife's g'father's he bought new in '76 to pull his horses. 6 months after having the truck he was in a head-on collision and died shortly after from the injuries. They had the truck fixed and kept it. It's got about 50,000 miles on it. They wanted me to have it so about 7 years ago I drove it back from Alabama on Thanksgiving. About 4 years ago it popped a gasket (head or intake, not sure considering the location) and I decided to semi restore it...really just "freshen it up". I'm just now getting around to it. I want it to be a clean survivor that Jen and her mom will be proud of. Paint will be back original but it will be a truck, used like it was bought for. The only thing non-stock that will be done will be dual exhaust and updated hitch.

Umm, just because the phone is smart does not mean the operator is. That would mean taking a pic and posting it, via phone, to the forum. It will be quicker for me to get the film developed and scan 'em in.

Fer crying out loud, just learn it already!

It took me 30 seconds to add this pic from the droid.

Not my desk! That was at the shop AFTER the desk occupier left for the day. Had the dog leave him a "gift".
