Flaming River Steering Box Question

M66Stang

Member
So I picked up a Flaming River 16:1 steering box, but it is a short shaft with splines on it not a long shaft spear-o-matic like the original in the '66. Do you guys see any reason why I can't remove my original long shaft and box, cut the shaft off the box and connect it to the new Flaming River box with one of their universal joints? That's how Flaming River markets their tilt column set-ups? Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Aside from adding a universal joint knuckle to connect your cut steering shaft to the FR input shaft, you'll need to install a bearing onto your cut steering shaft that will keep the shaft straight/centered within the steering column. This bearing/assembly is a common item when switching to a MII front suspension (where the original steering shaft is cut and connected to the R&P via universal joint knuckles. I'm unsure where you you can obtain the bearing kit, but any aftermarket MII front suspension supplier should have what you need.... such as Rod&Custom Motorsports (where I got my MII kit).

A picture of the installed bearing kit is seen here (not my car).

Thanks Dave. Would have figured that out when I tore everything apart, but much better to know now and be prepared for the reinstallation.

Thanks for the RCM link!

Just a follow-up. Got the bearing from Unisteer for $25. Haven't installed it yet, but it looks like it should do the job.
