Flaring a fuel filler neck

This weekend we're installing a 22 gallon tank in KBMWRS's fastback. Due to the increased height of the new tank, we will need to cut the bottom end of his current filler neck, losing it's flared end. How important is it to have the flare and if its that important, how would one create a new flare?

As long as the clamps are tight and you have a smooth cut, you should have no problem. I have cut many in the past on other vehicles without incident. I believe the flair is there mainly for the pressure that could build and cause the hose to swell.....that is if the tank venting system failed.

You could create another ridge by welding or brazing a small strap at the base of the neck and working it smooth.

You also could do two cuts and re attach the original end.

I also think there would be no problem when the flare is missing but for your peace of mind : you could weld a flare on the shortened filler neck/tube.

Like AzPete mentioned.

Not having the flare won't be an issue. Even Ford did not use the flare on some vehicles, the bumpside pickups are an example. If you have any question then use 2 clamps and clock them opposite each other, and I would use an american brand of screw clamp instead of the wire bail-type clamps unless the OEM look is a concern.

I always wondered if you could use a '70 neck since it should be shorter and at the proper angle?

The angle is better, but the distance to the tailpanel is different so it still won't work without modification.

Thanks to all for the replies. At this point I think we'll just chop the end and not bother flaring the end unless Michael insists.

Later I'm going to put a Tarafied1 modified fuel neck in Shag which will also be chopped since I'm running a 20 gal tank. At that point I might add a flare to it's newly cut end.

Sat we cut Mike's new filler neck and just let it go without flaring and it sealed up very well.
