Florida vacation in mid-August

Looking to head to FL in mid-August for a week. Looking for a non-crowded, family-friendly beach that is within close proximity to several attractions. I've never been to FL, but have been to the Gulf in Biloxi and the Atlantic coast at Virginia Beach. Neither was terribly crowded. I prefer the Atlantic coast because the kids like playing in the surf.

Any suggestions?

Bill

Flagler Beach and Ormond Beach are 2 that use to not be crowded. Not so sure about Ormond these days. 2 hrs or less to "O" town and the Mouse House. Stay away from the Daytona Beaches if you have kids.

Oh yeah, it's gonna be damn hot and damn humid in August, prepare yourself.

There's a great dive in Flagler Beach called the Turtle Shack. Best seafood in the area!

I grew up in Flagler County :thu

I know it's gonna be nasty that time of year. I don't want to go to Spring Break City.

Not sure what "attractions" you are thinking of, but when I was visiting about 15 years ago, Sebastian was a nice little town North of Vero Beach where the Loggerhead Turtles come each year to lay their eggs. Pretty amazing to see. There's also good fishing on the "River" (Intercoastal waterway ) just south of the Sebastian Inlet. Whitey's Bait shop at north end of the inlet is very convenient for live bait. There are a number of vacation beach rentals along A1A. Capt. Hiram's restaurant on the Marina in Sebastian is the place to go in town and turned out to be a great location for viewing the town's annual July 4th fireworks display which was essentially next door to the restaurant. It is not too far from Cape Canaveral which is a solid way to spend a day with the kids. RonJon's in Cocoa Beach is pretty amazing if your kids are into surfing or skateboarding.

anything below Daytona down to cocoa used to be good. when I was a "local" I spent most of my time at new smyrna beach.

August definitely isn't ideal, but my wife is low on seniority at her new job and bidding for a week in June was impossible, so that's how we got stuck with August :roul I might just on a cruise.

Look at the bright side, the hotter the weather the smaller the bikinis.

+1 for new smyrna beach. That's were we go. It's a nice beach.

When's the last time you were there? You know how places change over time.

About a month ago. Jens dad lives about 30 minutes from there and we go a few times a year now, whenever we see him.

The beaches south of St.Augustine are really nice too. Smyrna is where all the old people go!

That's OK with me, the young generation has no respect, so I prefer the older crowd. Does that mean I'm old?

Bill

I guess I'm getting old too. I like looking at the bikini girls as much as the next guy, but I can only get smacked by my wife so many times before it starts to get annoying. I just like a quiet place to relax.

Rabbit, did you worry about your daughter playing in the surf? My kids love playing in the surf and sharks always scare me, plus I like to swim out to the breakers and body surf back.

Bill

Nope. She had a sand shovel to fend off any sharks. J/k.
The only thing we were worried about was her getting knocked over by the waves, but she loved it.
