Fricken Speedo Cable

cmayna

DILLIGARA?
Donator
My 2nd attempt in trying to find one that fits Shag has failed. Again too damn long. So off to Palo Alto Speedometer to have one made up to my likings.

If you know how long of one you need, I may have one. I've got three at home -- all different lengths, that I don't use anymore since I swapped over to an electric speedo.

Again.....same issue I had, there is about a foot extra of it tucked under my dash. There is a picture in my gallery show how much to long the repops are...

See the "EXTRA" cable laying under the car...

Tonight I took my current too long of cable to Palo Alto Speedometer who will quote on either cutting it down or build a new one. Rick is right. It is about 12" too long. From the speedo to the tranny, I am measuring from the end of the cable housing up by the speedo....down to the rubber O-ring that seals the cable housing from the tranny and I get 53.5" on the tight side and 55" on the loose side. This was determined with the cable attached to the speedo and then pulled and put into place with the least amount of tight bends and keeping away from the exhaust.

I'm planning to go with 55". This is still 8+ inches shorter than current.

Be it known that my FMX cable fit perfectly with the T5 :pop

All I had to do was swap the driven gear and put it back in. :pbj

Are you staying with a mechanical speedometer? If so, WHY?

I'd go with an electrical speedometer ... much more accurate.

NPD catalog shows 70 FMX is 56", 68 3spd 58 3/16.

Scott Drake catalog shows 68 auto and 3spd 68", 4 spd 80"

Interesting.

Sluggo, does the 70 cable connect to the speedo with the screw on fitting or the slide on fitting?

I don't know about the 70, I have a 69 :lol but it uses a slide on.

The 4 speed cables enter the trans from the right side according to some of the stuff I read while gathering parts. That's why they are so long.

I think this was directed at Craig.

I will go electronic on mine down the road a ways. Trying not to let that "while I'm at it" thing to take over on this car.

Stages are good....on some things.

Apparently most of the repops are the wrong length. I got a factory-correct cable from Glazier's for my 67 w/toploader. It's the right length for sure, even though I don't have all of the proper clips on the body yet.

I am planning to convert my cluster to the autometer ultra lite version as they are the only ones in Kmh and temp in °C.
I will run an electronic speedo and a sensor on my T5z.

At the speedometer it is a slide on fitting with the plastic catch to hold it in place. The 69 and 70 cars used the same speedometer so the connection is the same.

I bought a '68 Mustang 4speed cable at the local O'reilly auto parts for my T5. Saved me the shipping of ordering from the Mustang parts house.

I wished I had gone with an electric speedo just like I have in Red. I guess I wasn't thinking when ordering. Oh well.

Is there an option for an electric speedo drive for a factory speedo or are you guys using Autometer gauges. My car originally came with trip speedo and tach combo so I've wanted to keep them, but to get them repaired/calibrated/refaced I'll probably end up spending just as much as if I bought the autometer stuff.

I'm just using a stock Ford VSS (vehicle speed sensor) from an 89 mustang (the donor car for my efi swap) to run my Autometer speedo. Calibrating the speedo is a piece of cake. Just find a 2 mile chunk of road. Start the calibration, when you get to the 2 mile mark -- stop and press the trip button. Done. The more accurate the 2 mile stretch, the more accurate your speedo. And if you change rear gears or tire size, no more counting speedo gear teeth -- just rerun the calibration.
