Gap in between firewall and inner fender well

So I'm knee deep in getting the engine bed stripped, cleaned ready for paint. I get the fenders off and find both sides of the inner fender wells have my VIN stamped on top of them. A promising sign. I start to pull the proportioning valve and noitce a big blob of what looks like bondo or some thing. I pop it off there and underneath is a gap 5/16" to 3/8" between the aft edge of the drivers fender well and the firewall.

The car has had the floors partially replaced but it was only the flat portion form the front floor lap joint going back. Firewall looks virgin to me. Ck out the pic, surely this isnt right? The other side doesnt have this gap.

What do you think?

I believe that's fairly typical with Mustangs. My car had a little bit of a gap there, too. These cars weren't built with extremely tight tolerances from the factory. Also, I think that "bondo" stuff is just old hardened seam sealer. However, it's hard to tell just from pictures.
