Ok, I've got to break down and buy the wife a GPS for repeat trips to SF to check on her brother. I would like to invest in one that has the ability to add an OBDII reader to the cars (3 with OBDII) so that I can swap it around and read codes, do diagnostics, performance data, etc. What is the requirement for the GPS to mate with the reader? Is Bluetooth the requirement? I'm looking at the Garmin nuvi 40/50LM as they are $100-$130 but can't find an OBDII reader adapter that will link to it but these models don't have bluetooth, is that why? This will be my first GPS as I can find anything with mapquest or a paper map.
If the OBDII reader adapter was bluetooth/wireless or wired it really wouldn't bother me if I could use a $100 GPS with a $40 wired adapter say vs. a $200 GPS and $100 bluetooth adapter.
We don't have smart phones and not really interested in going through that learning curve at the moment, would like to send her with a GPS that she could practice with at home a couple days and then use it in my vehicles for diagnostics/data so I don't have to buy a code reader also (lots more info from the GPS adapter it seems).
Update:
Well I found the Garmin bluetooth adapter I had read about, wasn't easy to find on their site:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=38354
I don't mind spending $75-$100 on this as I don't need it immediately like I do the GPS so I guess I'll shop Bluetooth Garmins. Unless I can find a cable that will do the same thing from the ODBII plug to a Nuvi 40 or 50.
