Gas tank replacement...oops

Is ther a Doofus if there is no blood or explosions?

The basis of my wanting to change to a 22gal tank is that for years I was tired of only being able to go 160 miles between fill-ups because of my stock 16gal tank. No comments on my gas mileage...it is what it is. So I buy a 22 gal and Craig offers up his help. :thu

Drop of the tank with new sending unit at Craigs weeks ago waiting for the right time we can get to it. Well in the mean time Craig is nice enough to paint the bottom of the tank.. Great.

Saturday he's all ready and I go over to his place for the swap.

Look in the trunk..."uh, Mike...this is a 20gal tank you have in here already"...Whaaaa?..."Yep 99.9% sure"

Duhh-Ohhhh!!!!!!

Well after much consternation I decided to go ahead with the swap anyway.

Come to find the filler neck was cut and welded to make the connection. Craig said it was almost like he did for Shag. So then we hope we can use it for the new tank. Nope. Line up is terrible. So Craig offers up a new filler neck which we cut to length. We also needed to move the neck of the tank some for better alignment. Did this with the use of a specialty tool Craig made up and his fork lift.

Well after a day all is well and the '67 is up and running.....with all of 2 more gallons. :shrug :shrug :roul :shrug

So....you never put in over 16 gals........or never filled it all the way up.......or just don't pay attention.......or....how the heck can one not know......lol. I must say, I had a laugh over that one since you have increased your driving distance by so much.

Well Pete,
You should have been there yesterday. After the discover, we didn't know what to do. Swap out the old 20 gal tank for the new 22 or just let it go. Since I already painted the bottom side of the 22 gal tank and it had a drain plug, I felt "shiaatt" let's just do it. Now Mike has a very clean tank and a better filler neck.

Hell...I got a free pizza lunch out of it as well.

Well dang! I swear if I didn't already have the tank armor I would be doing this swap.

New tank armor would be about $250 plus mine is painted to match the car.

Hopefully the gear vendors OD let's me hang with Mike on a full tank.

So, Mike the revised mileage must be around 8mpg? 160 miles / 20 gal = 8? That seems unusually low for the fwy considering you're really not a lead-foot. Maybe your gauge or sender was reading an unnaturally low volume when in fact you still had a decent amount left.

That was my guess right there!

What sending unit did you guys end up using? That would be a other issue for me as my 16 uses the original sending unit with a new float and sock.

I hate the repros out there.

Uh....and why would my gas mileage change because of the size of the tank?

Mileage is deduced using fuel used not fuel available. And since I never filled up more than 16gals (thoought my gauge was wrong remember) why would I be expecting I had a different sized tank?

We used the sending unit that was in the tank. It was original. Craig cleaned it up and we checked it with 1/4 tank and it read spot on.

As mike says we used his original sending unit, mainly because it is an original Ford unit which was extremely clean inside and test good. Being a sending unit for a 16 tanker, what it will do is read full longer than if we had used a 22 tanker sending unit. The most important reading is 1/4 tank. That's all we should care about.

Justin, maybe you could sell the 16gal armor and get a new one for a bigger tank? Of course keep in mind how much each additional gallon of gas weighs let alone the tank armor.

This is definitely on my list of must do's but I will leave it until the car is pretty much done since it isn't critical to getting up and running.

Sorry to hear that you guys did all that wacky work no net 2 more gallons.

I'm afraid I really laughed when I heard your not-so-funny punch line.

The issue is, if you gassed-up based only the "E" gauge reading, assuming a 16-gal tank, and did not check the amount you actually pumped in, then your mileage figures would be off.

Mikey,
Look at it this way (just trying to help justify the work), at least you are continuing to learn more and more about your car.

What???
I filled it to the top every time..Didn't let it get low on the 'gauge' because I thought the 'gauge' was wrong. Mileage is figured using amount of gas pumped into the tank versus miles driven.
If you determine mileage by the size of the tank and not fuel used then your mileage figures are messed up.

Yeah now I 'know' more about my car. Was it worth 2 gals? nope....but the tank was already purchased and painted so why not change it out?

Plus with the new tank, you don't have to worry about whether there's an accumulation of rust inside.

No but I think the tire fluid is low and it needs to be rotated....well duh there I go again...the tires rotate by themselves. :roll :roll :hide

Too funny!

But don't worry, I know I've fixed plenty of things that weren't broken! :roul

I just hope you haven't lost too much trunk space. . . :nut
