Getting old.....

I have a seminar this weekend training under a 7th degree black belt that is coming in from Japan.

I must be getting older since I have already been thinking I have to stock up on icy hot and Tylenol to hang in there for regular class on Thursday and then for the seminar a two hour class on Friday night, a couple of two hour sessions on Saturday and then a final two our session on Sunday morning.

Lucky for me, the guy coming in is also a Kendo master so we spend at least half of each session on weapons training.

Anyone else ever feel old when they come across things like this or start to wonder sometimes if you getting too old for some of this kind of sh*t? :headac

I had to quit my training when I reached 44 yrs old. I was just starting into my traing for black. My hip kept popping out on certain kicks. I enjoyed going to training and sparring, we had some good times. Now I can,t even think about trying some of those moves or kicks. Old age and lack of practice sucks.

Lucky for me, I train in Aikido and we don't really use kicks, etc.

But I am amazed how out of shape you can get so quickly. I missed class for about 3 weeks due to having the flu and then that turning into pneumonia. First class back I really felt it.

Last Thursday's class was good...my teacher was out of pocket and got a guy that is always around to teach for him as a fill in. He literally wrote the book on women's self-defense and always makes for a good class when he teaches. He's a former TKD guy that decided to switch art forms at some point down the line.

If you have any women in your life (wife, mom, daughter, etc) his book is a good one for them to read.... http://www.seesallykickass.com/id1.html

I NEVER think I'm too old to do anything....that's part of my problem!

I will be 63 this month and have run most of my adult life. When younger, I never trained especially, just got out there and ran 8 to 10 miles on the average. I now limit myself to running 5 miles, but train by timing and pacing myself and adding one mile sprints afterwards. In the last 6 months, my 5 mile time has dropped from 42 minutes (8:20 avg minutes per mile) to 38 minutes (7:36 avg minutes per mile). I like to think that with age comes doing things smarter(?)

I like to think that with age comes doing nothing to exert myself. I figure my heart has a limited number of beats left and I'm conserving them.

Back in the Marines I used to run with a guy. One year he decided he wanted to run in the annual Wash. DC Marine Corps Marathon so he started doing some distance work. On mile number 24 of the marathon his heart exploded and he was dead before he hit the ground.

I take my buildings elevator up to the second floor. Sometimes I have to wait for what seems like a very long time as it's an old elevator in an old building. You know what I do while waiting? I sleep standing up. The little "ding" noise wakes me up. I'll wait for the elevator to bring me down the flight of stairs also. The only other guy I ever see using the elevator has the old Forest Gump style leg braces on. We sometimes wait together. He looks like he's in his mid 80's. If it's working for him, it's gotta be good for me too!

I'll take dying from an exploded heart over an extended stay in a nursing home waiting to die any day!

And miss out on all those sponge baths by the young nurses?

Too many boiled peanuts for you buster! They've sucked out your brains.

My better half has worked in long term care for 20 years, I've seen THOSE nurses......I'll pass (insert running away smilie that Sluggo & Steve took away)

Heart disease is hereditary with exception of things like smoking / diet can have an effect on it.

My personal view though is that when God decides to pull your ticket then that's your time and there is not a thing you can do about it.

What I don't want to do is to be like my grand mother. She is still alive at about 91 but has totally checked out from reality. My sister made the mistake of going to see her a few years ago. Granny baby sat my sister while my mom worked for years when my sister was little and my sister lived with them a couple of semesters when she was at Baylor. When my sister went to see her Granny didn't have a clue who she was.

I've told people if I get to that point, please do me a favor put a bullet in my head or beat me to death with a bat or whatever it takes.

I used to love running but it's hard on the knees. In cross country in high school we used to run about 10 miles a day. Between that and playing tons of football when I was younger my knees ain't what they used to be.

My knees have given in to Darwinism. I don't look at them as old and defective. I marvel at how they can occasionally bend both ways. I'm not getting old, I'm evolving!
