GM says almost-driverless cars coming by 2020

General Motors says that before the end of this decade it will begin selling cars that can almost drive themselves.

The automaker says a system, called "Super Cruise" will use radar and a camera to steer cars, keeping them between the lane lines. The radar also will keep cars a safe distance from cars head of them.

GM and other automakers already offer radar-guided cruise control systems that keep their cars safely behind other traffic. They also have systems that warn drivers if they're drifting out of their lanes. But until recently, GM says engineers haven't been able to steer with computers.

The GM system uses computers to control electric power steering, keeping the car in its lane. The company says such a car could be on the road in as little as six years.

Hmmm...I had heard GM will be having a hard time selling any cars to anyone circa 2018.

That just means the wife and I can fool around in the back seat as the car drives us around.....

I can send the car to the store for groceries...just call the order ahead.....

Now the car is responsible for accidents......

Really, all they have done is computerize the person that normally rides in the passenger seat.

If most idiots are put into the pass seat instead of behind the wheel, the roads will actually be safer and less congested for those of us that can drive!

I'm all for it.

Nissan Announces Plans to Release Driverless Cars by 2020
This is the one I read about---I drove a Taurus sho with the gap for cruise control Tuesday---it kept a specified distance between the car in front using radar--it also brakes for you.

Who the hell wants a car that they don't DRIVE? One of the greatest feelings in the world is hoping in your car and hitting the road. If you want piloted around take a freaking bus.

That's not the question, there are MANY people that SHOULDN'T drive!

A real driving instruction requirement and exam would take care of those people.

I agree with that.

Everyone, no exceptions, should have to pass a HPDE course of no less than 3 weekends to get a license. That or outlaw auto insurance and make each driver fully responsible for their actions. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

Back to reality.

Of course these 'systems' are all predicated on the fact that the streets/roads are properly maintained with correct side marker or lane stripes.
And the legal community I'm sure is just salivating at their future income.

dumb them down and further detiorate their driving skills. What this will bring is increased chaos when an unplanned event occurs. For example, let's say a cinder block falls off a truck in front of one of these bot-cars.

It wouldn't have the sense to move around it and there'd be a wreck.

We've lost our swagger....

this is exactly what I was thinking. I drive my modern car and I can understand why drivers get distracted. It's comfortable, easy to drive and doesn't require a lot of concentration. I hop in the old Mustang and it has no sound deadner, no PS, PB, etc. etc. It's not "hard" to drive but you have to be paying attention. I grew up driving beaters, many were pretty crude. I have a 72 Chevy pickup now too and it has PS and PB but still requires a bit of attention when driving. As people become more used to the "car" making the desicions, they will make less. I am all for safety, but I too want to "drive"
I like my suspension to be a bit harsh, I like to "feel" the road thru the steering, I don't mind really mashing on the brake pedal.

Lately, there is a TV ad for a Lexus(?) that detects possible collisions 2-3 cars in front of you. How in the world can sensors detect something in front of the car in front of you? Hmmmm?

Uhh, false advertising??

Hell, I don't even trust the damn backup camera in the Escape! I'd say 99% of the time, I don't even notice it there.

I drive a lot of rental cars. Some with lots of features. I don't trust them yet but I can imagine the younger generation, they will think it's normal and expect it to work correctly or as advertised. They will become numb to actually driving (I think). My boys want to take an actual driving course which I think I will support. They also will have experiance driving my beaters too so hopefully they will get a sence of actually piloting the car and not just riding in the driver's seat.

They will peel the steering wheel from my cold dead hands...not before with some gadgetry.

So are you saying that you never pushed the "Auto-Pilot" button on your F-16? Or is that different?
