Good Boating Forum?

I'm in the process of buying a 1997 Baja 38 Special for diving and cruising the Sea of Cortez. It's a bank repo and I got a killer deal on an awesome boat, which is something I've always wanted. Basically, this boat is the water equivalent of Trouble. :steer

I'm looking for a good forum about boat discussion topics. Can anyone recommend one?

Have you ever owned a boat before? In life you have not begun to spend ridiculous amounts of money until you've owned and operated a boat. BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand. I spend a lot of time on the water in the warmer months, sometimes on my boat, sometimes on a friends boat. It's fun.... when I'm on someone else's boat. Owning and operating a boat is IMO a PITA. I'm not trying to discourage you, more of a "warning". Make sure you know what you're getting into and good luck!

Just so Dave doesn't completely scare you off......Boats don't necessarily become money pits. They're like vintage cars, if you keep up with the regular maintenance you will run into very few problems. I've had my ski boat (1996 Mastercraft ProStar 190) now for 5 years and the only money I've spent is on gas and general maintenance stuff. We spend all summer skiing and I run the boat hard!

Now, if you neglect the basics, Dave is dead on!

Maintenance is the key. I have not had any problems with my boat in the 5 years since we have owned it, but we did buy it new.
Make sure to have the boat your buying checked out. If the previous owner gave it back to the bank he may have neglected it's maintenance.

Laurie:

I don't have a boat forum recommendation for you but this thread reminds me of a plaque that I recall seeing on a very nice boat that once belonged to friends of mine. It read:

"Definition of 'Boat'
A hole in the water surrounded by wood
into which you are perpetually throwing money"

Oh, I know about that saying. LOL Yes, I've had the boat mechanically checked out, which became a problem. Once people in the area heard those twin engines fire up, they came over to try and buy the boat. Although the boat was built in 1997, the engines are brand new and were installed last year to the tune of $25,000. I've been given the maintenance logs and invoices.

In fact, when my credit union called the credit union in Utah that holds the title to go over the blue book value, the Utah credit union tried to get the boat back from the broker. Too late, I already have a deposit on it and a purchase agreement. It blue booked at $91,000 and I'm buying it for $52,000, which also includes the trailer and covers. Plus, it has quite a bit of costly extras that don't show up in the blue book value. The only things it didn't have were the props. It's never been in salt water, which is another plus. I have a friend who knows boats and he's helping me with this. He's my dive buddy, so we'll by enjoying the boat together.

Another saying you've probably heard..... the two happiest days of your life are the day you buy your boat and the day you sell it!

Considering that I'm practically stealing it, I'll be very happy the day I sell it because I should do very well with it. :)

OMS....knowing next to nothing about boats other than they float... I had to goggle it... not the one your buying, but a baja 38

Yep, that's pretty much what it looks like. Mine has a custom paint job that looks pretty cool. They're kind of like cigarette boats, but with the way this one is equipped, it will be great for diving.

Does it have a platform on the back? That ones seems like it would be hard to climb up on wearing a tank, although I have made a couple dives in the Keys off of a 40' sail boat....

Yes, it has a big platform, plus a ladder that pulls out from underneath the platform. It's perfect for diving.
