Good Sci-Fi books?

I'm looking for some good sci-fi books. Any suggestions?
Currently I like new writer Patrick Lee. Last year he had "The Breach" and this year he had "Ghost Country". A little adventure/action with some sci-fi elements added in.
I am reading right now Altar of Eden by James Rollins. Good so far.

Is sci-fi just not popular anymore?

I think it's more fantasy based than sci-fi, but I keep hearing the Wheel of Time series is good. I prefer more fantasy related stuff myself, like Terry Goodkinds Sword of Truth series.

I personally dislike fantasy...but I absolutely love the Sword of Truth and Wheel of Time series. Those will keep you occupied for a while, and hopefully by the time you're done, the last book of the WoT series will be published. Make sure you don't forget The Law of Nines to complete the SoT series.

For regular sci-fi, you may check out Peter F. Hamilton. I've read most of his books. All of them are good, and some of the multi-book series are phenomenal.

As kind of a side venture, I'd also recommend picking up an H.P. Lovecraft anthology (the British-published Necronomicon is what I own). Never very popular in his time, he's recognized now as an inspiration for most popular horror and sci-fi writers since. The genre is hard to describe. Some of it ventures into sci-fi, some of it is plain horror, some of it is occult, but it's all very, very good.

So many of these are older titles. Great, I'm sure but is there a lost love with sci-fi these days? I know there are the Star Wars and Star Trek continuation type of books but original idea sci-fi is hard to come by it seems.
I'm going to check out some of those authors.

Peter F. Hamilton is all modern stuff. And some of the Dune stuff is new (from Frank Herbert's son, along with Kevin J. Anderson), although obviously the original story is older.

There's stuff around, it's just hard to find.

+1 for Peter F Hamilton. His big trilogy (or 6 book series if you get the paperbacks) is one of my favorites. Another modern author I like a lot is Tad Williams. His Otherworld series are the best virtual reality books I've read. He did a good fantasy series a while back as well. William Gibson is the original and best of the cyberpunk genre - dark, near future stuff, and written in a unique style. If you want something funny, Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is awesome. Don't be put off by the lame movie. His spitirtual twin in the fantasy world is Terry Pratchett. A great old school hard SF author is Larry Niven.

Yes, reading is another thing that keeps me out of the garage and away from the car...

Also, I really enjoyed The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

+1 This was a great series. I'm not a Stephen King guy, but this series had me waiting for each book to come out. I don't know if it would be sci-fi enough for you, but Dean Koontz Odd Thomas series was good too.

In addition to Dune (a classic series I think should be required reading) I liked the Galactic Center series by Gregory Benford, although I didn't read it in order and it probably should be. West of Eden, by Harry Harrison has one of the most unique plots I've read; in it, dinosaurs were never exticted and became an intelligent civilisation. The bit I liked most was the fact that all their technology was living; species had been bred to serve all the functions we need machines for, even so small a thing as a microscope, and so large as an ocean liner were living beings.
