Goodbye to a very loyal and great friend

guruatbol

Always on vacation!
Today I had to put down our loyal, awesome dog of 15 years. She had a tough go of it through her life but was always part of the family! As a pup she got Parvo and had to stay at the Vet for a week. When she went into her first heat, she got out of the yard and got hit by a car and had to have pins put in her knee, then when we moved to Utah she was exploring and the Coyotes got her. she was fortunate to get away but tore her ACL in the good knee. Then the neighbor shot her three times! This is when we found out she not only had arthritis in her spin but bone cancer and heart disease. She has been on meds for the last year which made her fairly active.

Yesterday afternoon she played with me and the other two dogs and by the evening she stopped eating and would move. when she did move she would drag her rear legs behind her. We thought we would watch her and that maybe she just had over done it. tonight she started vomiting, her breathing was very difficult and wet and she just wouldn't move. We had hoped to wait until Monday when the Vet was open, but when blood came up with the vomit, I knew something had to be done.

I had a neighbor come over with his backhoe and dig me a hole and I had the displeasure of putting her down. This has got to be the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I will miss Maxi!

I have a pic I would like to attach, but since this is the first thread I have started with the new forum, I can't figure it out. Not as easy as before.

Sad day none the less. Thanks for allowing me to ramble on.

Really sorry Mel. To put her down yourself must have been really hard. Our animals do become family more than just pets.

OK, here is her picture when we were painting our house. We were living in a neighbor's guest house and we had four little kittens. The kittens would just be all over Maxi, she tolerated it. This pic is of Maxi and Taz, Max had leaned on one of the walls and got paint all over her.

Sorry to hear this news. Putting her down yourself is not something
I could do...had to be very difficult. Now plant a tree there to give
her shade and protection.

The choice I had was for her a very uncomfortable 30 mile drive to the emergency room or take her up on the hill and put her down very quick and painless.

I did what I felt would be the least suffering on her part.

This has been the hardest thing I have ever done. I put her on the side of the hill behind our house very near one of three natural cedar trees on our property. It is a spot she would frequent when we watered the garden.

She went out playing with her human Daddy which was her favorite thing to do and not a minute more suffering than had to be there!

Thank you guys for your comments, means a lot!

Sorry to hear of your loss, Mel. Welost our Staark last November. Our Porsche is still hanging in there at 13-1/2 years young. She's o Glucosamine and a couple of other pills to help with the arthritis and pain. Still, she climbs the stairs each night to sleep at the foot of our bed.

Try a doggie aspirin a day. It helped Max with her spinal arthritis.
