Got my lucky break with police yesterday--

I pulled away from a junction stop sign about a mile and a half from my house yesterday morning and opened up the 05 gt a bit and was passing a jeep when I saw a police car backed off of the road running radar--way too late---I went ahead and pulled over and was waiting for him, he walked up and said "speeding up to pass a car is one thing but 97 miles an hour is a bit much"(the limit was 55) I just smiled and said I could not argue with him, I said I hadn't had the car out in a while and was "opening it up" he was about my age, and I namedropped a couple of buddies I knew from where he worked and I ended up with a written warning for 66 in a 55---whew--I now officially apologize for all the bad things I have ever said about policemen.

Got pulled over a "few" times long before I put on a badge. There were several times when I saw them at the last second. I too just pulled over and waited. Most of the time I just got a lecture and a warning. One of those times was the same thing (in the '86 GT), passing a car and slightly exceeding the posted limit. As I switched back into my lane I saw a patrol car coming at me. I just pulled over and waited. The officer even mentioned it, saying he appreciated the fact I did that. Actions like that go a LONG way in minimizing the outcome!

p.s. As a word of advice; generally name dropping backfires. Most officers hate it. If you need "help", wait until later to put in a call to the folks you know.

Lol, everybody "knows" the sheriff or other officers. Before becoming the popo, I knew many. I never name dropped. I have however gotten my ticket and "casually" mentioned it to a coworker of the cop who issued. It typically resulted in the ticket going away.

Last time I had a situation like that I 'dropped' Duane's name. I got another citation for littering.

I always liked the ones who told me they knew the mayor. My reply would be, "Wow, how ironic. I know him too, he signs my pay check!" I did have one guy who was about to go to jail. He told me he knew one of the captains on the department. Unfortunately for him, that particular captain and I shared an intense dislike of each other (I wasn't alone...MANY people didn't like him either!). I asked the guy, "Do you know him well enough that he's gonna post your bond so you can get of of jail?". He decided he didn't know him as well as he had tried to lead us to believe! LOL

I had a guy getting smart with me the other day and made mention he would just talk to the sheriff. My response:

Me: You mean "John"? "John Doe"?
Him: Sure do. Know him well.
Me: Holy shit dude, that's the guy who hired me! I can give you a ride if you like. Got plenty of room!

I love my job.
