Got my seats back from upholstery. How important are the spacers?

Or fiberglass washers that protect vinyl at top and bottom pivot point? I didn't have them when I took the seats apart......My upholstery guy had one that would work. Can I use a metal washer?

I have zero spacers on my 67 and there were metal spacers on the 65. I don't know if I can even find them to put the stock seats back in.
