GPS decision to make

I have a TomTom One that's several (3-4) years old. It costs $60 to update the maps. Would I be better off just buying a new GPS unit?

Latest recommendations? An option that doesn't cost a fortune for map updates would be nice. I guess it's kinda like printers and ink cartridges. :shrug

Map updates suck....I use Garmin and have had no problems but....map updates suck......

SWMBO got me a Garmin for Christmas in '09. I updated the maps on it one time, your price sounds very close to what I paid. The next year it started asking me again to update the maps. I did not comply. Then the touchscreen started being non-responsive, until it totally quit. Took it back to Costco, got my money back and bought a new unit for 1/2 the price. This one has traffic alerts which I find not very useful. But the point is that the price of a new unit will be a little more than your update. Just looked at costco.com and they have a tomtom with lifetime maps for 99.99. Garmin is 119.99.

I bought a tomtom a few months ago, $99, and did not elect to get the maps upgradeable model for add'l $50.

Frank, you need to ask yourself how often you are driving to a newer development that was not around 3-4 years ago when you bought your unit. If the answer is "never" then there's no need to upgrade your maps at $60.

I'm not sure what cell phone (if any) you have but many do have integrated maps into them, negating the need for gps.

I don't have a smartphone, so no GPS there. My TomTom got me lost on the highway south from Branson, MO last year. Apparently, a large stretch of the highway is new.

It's not only that, we use ours to find local attractions (shops, restaurants) when we're on the road.

Ours is a Garmin too, BTW

I have two Garmin GPSs which have been replaced by my iPhone with "Motion X-GPS" (cost $2.99). Its maps are constantly updated. Added value of the phone is that it's with me all the time (foot navigation capability). It not only finds a restaurant for me but it can call them if needed.

The accuracy of the GPS depends on the gov agencies sending in changes. So a brand new GPS may be inaccurate when you buy them. Here in Knoxville the state delayed sending in the revamped freeway for a year or more.

Hehehehe, your Tom tom got you lost.....hehehehe

I have a tomtom and I like it most of the time, but have come to really like my Droid for navigation. It uses Google maps so it is always up to date.

The problem with the tomtom is just like all the rest of the dedicated GPS units, you have to either get one that updates automatically and pay a service fee or update it frequently. Oh, the updates are only as good as the place/people who publish them and the frequency of updates for each map.

The tomtom uses a user style update, so if there is no user that sends in an update for that area that recently changed there will be a likelihood that you will get lost.

I have loved my tomtom for the four years I have had it, but now it just sits in the console of the truck. I use it mainly to tell me how far I have to go and how fast I am going.

Mel are you sure Google maps are always up to date? The Google map that shows my location is at least 5 years old. Don't they also depend on agencies giving them changes?
