Grinding noise?

I pulled the Mustang out today and noticed something strange.

When I am backing up I hear a grinding sort of noise, from the front wheel area. In particular when backing and turning the wheel I heard the noise.

Any ideas? Maybe a wheel bearing?

I don't hear it when going forward.

Could be something loose inside the drum, spring/self adjuster. Wheel bearing normally makes noise in both direction.

I just took it for a fast once around the block. It has gotten much worse. Now backing straight back I hear and feel a rythmic thunk thunk sort of sound along with the steering jerking. Almost like I have a flat side on my front wheels. Still seems to go forward fine but I did hear a little grinding sound at one stop sign.

Jack up the front....spin each wheel and see if you can pinpoint the sound better. Then remove parts and see what is happening. Keep going around the block and you may end up on a tow truck.

Don't drive the car any further until you find the issue. As Pete mentioned, examining each wheel/hub assembly unloaded will pinpoint the issue. *Don't* drive the car. Once you find the issue, post it.

We had a Sunday school class party this evening so I didn't get to look at it this evening since we didn't get home till about 10:30 p.m.

Hoping to have a look tomorrow.

It has disc brakes on the front since someone asked.

Hope to get time to investigate more tomorrow but I'll keep you posted.

On the plus side of things...the party was at a class member's house who is restoring a '74 Datsun Z car that he's had in storage for years so of course a couple of us guys had to go out to the garage and have a look.

haven't had a ton of time to investigate but I am certain the problem lies in the driver side front wheel. Between church and one of the boys friends coming over I jacked up the front. Passenger side spins freely pretty much till you stop it. Drivers side spins maybe a couple of rotations with slight grinding sound the stops. When I get a chance I'll pull the wheel off on that side for further investigation. In hindsight though. That is the side the bearing was bad on about six months to a year ago. My guess is it might be a cheap bearing was put in.

If the bearing was replaced 6 mos ago, Was the race replaced too?
If not then a close inspection of it is in order.
I know some won't do it but, Wheel bearings and races should be replaced as a set.

It could be a loose nut behind the wheel, or your muffler bearing going out :lol Rich

Sometimes a smara$$ on the forums isn't so helpful.

What is helpful though is getting under the car and looking around. Got a minute to do just that and the issue is apparently I had a bolt fall out. See red circle on the picture.

Makes sense I was only hearing the noise when backing. If you grab the bottom of the caliper you can lift it up. When the wheel was spinning backwards the caliper was probably lifting on the bottom.

Guess I'll have to find a bolt to replace the missing one.

Glad you found the problem. Just be sure to check them all.......

Probably a good idea. It is the chacostang (sp?) kit that's on the car.

I am wondering if there is any particular torque specs to tighten the bolt to...

That is the same bolt that fell out of mine near the start of this season. If you have original style disc in front, you can buy that bolt from NPD. I looked all over for one locally and never found one. They have a special shoulder on them. I bought 2 from NPD so I would have an extra. Put lock tight on them so they won't back out. We both got lucky that the upper bolt wasn't the one to fall out. That would have messed up the cal., wheel and hoses.

Sorry if you didn't see the humor in an old joke. I apologize if it offended your intelligence. All of my christian friends have a good sense of humor. Rich.

Didn't mean to sound harsh...I was just joking as well.

Just glad I figured out what was up. At first I couldn't imagine.

I could have made a joke about Mark's favorite car being in the back ground if I had been in a joking mood.
