Has anybody used the Schluter Kerdi shower system?

I'm in the process of renovating my master bath, and want a tile shower instead of the fiberglass insert that was there before. I've looked into the Schluter Kerdi shower system, with the polystyrene base and Kerdi waterproofing. The reviews are good and the video makes it look easy (of course). Has anybody done this, and can offer any tips? Or are there any other options for an easy tile-ready base?

I used their membrane on top of a mortar we poured for the shower base. Expensive but I liked the piece of mind that the membrane provided. Its only been down a few months but so far everything is fine.

Living the dream or running it down... Haven't figured out which yet.

You should talk to Jeremy, he's tiling his basement bath right now. Heck of a job he's doing too! It's posted on Facebook.

I've never done the pan, but done the tub surround. I spoke to a couple tile guys. One said it was best to float it. Kinda like concrete. Pretty difficult if you ask me. The other said to use wonder board over green drywall and seal the joints with drywall mesh and thinset like you would tape drywall. The use an acrylic adhesive type compound instead of thinset.

I did one shower with thinset and it lasted as good or IMHO better than the acrylic.

The pan has to have people drainage and be sealed very well. I would probably want that professionally floated.

We did the wonder board with mesh tape and thinset the joints. We floated a floor of concrete then use the membrane over that. Overkill but I didn't want any leaks.

I used the shower floor and wall membrane in a renovation around 5 years ago. I was very happy with it. My biggest suggestion is to mix your thinset a little wet when applying the membrane to the walls then use a straight edge to really make sure everything is smooth. If not, your tile installation will be a little irregular. (Ask me how I know). It's really pretty simple to use. Good luck!
