Header clearance solution?

I just got around to putting on my JBA shorty headers. I have an unusual combo of dropped mounts and Steeroids rack on my car so I was not very optimistic it would clear everything. Much to my surprise it fits almost perfectly. When I put the rack back in the shaft barely touches the tube. Everything bolts up fine but the header tube barely touches. I could ding the tube but I really don't want to do that.

As fate would have it I got the new issue of Popular Hot Rodding in the mail yesterday and on the first page there is an add for CPP (classic performance products). They have a product I have never noticed before listed in the add, a max clearance power steering shaft. Basically a steering shaft that has been turned down in the middle to create more space for headers. I can't see spending $49 plus shipping for it though. I have a machine shop that could turn it down for less than half of that cost. My thought was to have it turned down 3/16" but I want to get your opinions on how far I should go.

we always end up turning down the double d bar, or shaft as you call it. don't turn down any more than you have to. we probably are a half inch wide and maybe 1/8 of material. Rich.

Thanks for the help Rich. I dropped it off today to have 1/8" taken off. That should give me just enough clearance I need and a little extra for engine movement.
