I am doing some work on the 65 coupe this winter. Converting to hyd clutch, fixing rear main oil leak, and installing all new steering and suspension.
While removing the tranny to fix the seal and install a new bellhousing I had to cut out the existing exhaust. It has a pretty standard 289 with a mild cam, 4 barrel carb and stock exhaust manifolds. The PO did install a nice 2.25 exhaust system with flowmasters.
My question is while I have everything out and had to cut the system at the tranny do I install a set of Heddman 1 5/8 headers I have from an old project or spend the money installing new 1 1/2 headers. I dont want to run manifolds any more so they are coming out no matter what.

If the 1 5/8 will fit, I'd install those. It's a pretty standard size tubing for headers so don't be worried it's too large vs. the just-slightly-smaller 1 1/2. I'd doubt you'd notice any performance differences between those sizes anyway.

What condition are your Hedmans in? Do they need to be painted or coated?

They are pretty much new with Jet Hot coating on them. Took off one of the manifolds last night. Will see how the passenger side fits tonight.

Got a few minutes to run home and I tried the passenger side header. Its not going to work. They hit the belhousing mouting ear just above the starter. Would have to cut out the tube and move it to make these headers work. Dang it.

No way to stick a BF-prybar up the collector and half-assed pry it out of the way?
