Heater core heads up

For 1st gen cars, there are some crappy aluminum heater core repros out there. I found an exact brass replacement at Napa for $29. Made in the USA too! NPD has it also, but for $39. CJs has it for $51.

I know this is an old thread, but it had some good info. I wrote down the part number of the heater core Ryan found at NAPA for future use. I FINALLY got around to visiting one of my local NAPA stores today to pick up a heater core for the coupe. When it arrived it turned out to be an aluminum unit manufactured by Spectra Premium. Spectra Premium stuff is good quality , but I would prefer a brass unit if possible.

The photo on the NAPA inventory computer still shows a picture of a brass unit. The manager (who happened to be the person helping me out), called another store in the state and asked them to check the one listed on their shelf. It too was aluminum. He said yet another location in the state showed 3 on the shelf. He ordered all 3 to be delivered to him so we could go through them. He also said if those were all the same he'd call the warehouse in NC! I gotta say he's doing his damnedest to find me a brass one. Just be aware though that the 660-3000 part number no longer guarantees a brass unit. Just thought I pass the latest along if someone refers back to this thread.

p.s. It didn't hurt my chances of locating one in the fact the manager is a Mustang fan/owner too. He's got a '65 coupe that he showed me a pic of! :thu

This is a good heads up. Oh and just be sure to do a pressure test to the core before you install it.

Quick update. I went by NAPA today. The three heater cores had arrived on Sat. (unfortunately my work day had been so busy I couldn't stop by then). Of the 3 heater cores they received, 1 was brass.....YEAH!! :yah

Those guys went above and beyond for me! :thu

I don't know about who makes those "crappy" aluminum heater cores but all your new cars are aluminum as is the radiator. It's not the aluminum's fault! :guns

I work for an aluminum company and we supply the stock for Ford, GM and Chyrsler

Ah, ah....now Craig. I NEVER called anything "crappy". As a matter of fact, if we couldn't find a brass one I was willing to take the aluminum one. The Spectra stuff is good quality. IMHO, aluminum components doesn't mean "crappy". I was just really hoping for brass for this particular part.

p.s. Surprisingly enough, one of the counter sales guys at the store turned out to be a long lost friend I hadn't seen in almost 35 years!

I know you didn't but the original post said that there are some crappy aluminum heater cores out there. This may be true as I don't know anything about the one he is speaking of. Just wanted to say that aluminum in and of itself doesn't make them crappy.
That's all. No worries!

No worries at all my friend! :thu

BTW, I guess I should have added in my posts that the cost for it was only $25. A decent price for a quality heater core..brass or aluminum!

The last heater core I bought from NAPA was made in China and lasted maybe 1 year probably 2000 miles in my sixty six. Needless to say I was not very happy.

Was yours brass or aluminum Ron? The aluminum Spectra stuff they're now using is made in Canada and the brass one I got is "Hencho in Mexico".

Thanks Ron. I'd be just a little upset too after only a year...okay, I lie. I'd be pissed!!! LOL I'm crossing my fingers then that the ones made south of the border last a little longer!

Heater core issues only happen to those who sport these kind of badges on their Mustangs:
