Heater core replacement?

OK, I have to admit this. I have never replaced a heater core. I've been lucky you might say. Now, I must replace the core in my 68. What do I have to do and is it an easy task?

Simple task Mike.

Remove the ALL of the split seam clips holding the heater plenum together. With the clips removed, you can "split the case" without removing/disconnecting everything. Once the case is split, the heater core is easily accessible on the inboard side of the heater plenum. The only thing holding the core inside the plenum is it's "snug" fit and the two band clamps for the heater hoses on the back side of the plenum.

$5 you crack the case getting it open.....They are a PIA. Also, when you disconnect to hoses, protect your carpet so you dont spill water and antifreeze all over the carpet, it will stain it.

Aw Rick quit being such a sourpuss....[he's right though]

I found that if you take a flat blade screwdriver and just gently rock the clip back and forth a few times they will come off without cracking the case. Dont pry with the screwdriver between the clip and case. Put your screwdriver in the ridge of the clip and rock back and forth. I would just pull the whole thing out and rebuild the case while I was at it. I usually try and check the heater core before installing as well. Use new heater hoses as they arent easy to access once installed. Good luck!!!!

I stick a screwdriver in the clip itself, where the end folds back on itself. Then pry it away from the case like you are opening the clip. They come right off with no damage. Putting them on in a similar style works good too.

EASY!, EASY?!?! BULLSH!!!!!!!T. Maybe because my car is equiped with air. What a PITA! I couldn't reach the clips on the backside so I had to pull the whole box out. Then getting the core out was a biatch. I've got it out and will take a few days rest before attempting the re-install. I'll drink a few beers before I do :crazy

And no, I didn't break anything :nice
