Help, Major trans leak in C4 auto

Spent the Xmas holiday with my dad... his 66 has a major leak. He had it up on stands and I watched while he fired it up. A major stream of fluid is coming out where the bell-housing bolts on. Is that the pump seal to case? He recently changed the front seal where the converter goes in thinking that was where his leak was but he didn't pull the pump out. It's been many many years since it was rebuilt, has maybe 80,000 miles on it and sits every winter while he is Florida (this year being the exception).

It sounds like the pump but I don't have much experience with C4's. Hopefully will chime in but meanwhile let's spend some time on the net surfing C4 leaking issue. If I find something, I'll chime back.

thanks, I've been looking. I can't tell if there is an o-ring or just a gasket. I guess either way the trans has to come out...

Bad news ... it's your pump gasket, guaranteed. The gasket sit in about 1/2"-1" into the tranny. The pump then slides in and sits on the gasket and then the bellhousing bolts go through the bellhousing, pump, the gasket, and into the case. If the gasket is bad, your leak will be between the bellhousing and the case. The inside of your bell housing will be bone dry. The only way for tranny fluid to get INTO the bellhousing is from the FRONT seal, not the pump gasket.

More bad news ... good luck finding the gasket. Transtar may have one, but that's about the only place I can even think of to get it. I had to make my own when the front pump gasket started leaking on my C4, because I couldn't find one ANYWHERE. When I tried the Ford dealer, they asked "what's a C4?"

Take care of it QUICK! Mine started as a slow leak, and within a month progressed to downpour.

Thanks Pete, it's already too late. The car pumps out so much fluid it wouldn't get far. Inside bell-housing is dry. It only leaks when it's running. It's just a PIA with full length headers. My dad is 69 and he already pulled it out to change the front seal this fall. I'm afraid he will not let me know when he is going to pull it again and he has no help close by. I guess I could just make a plan and go over and say we are yanking the trans today!
It's a bummer, my son's AOD is going out too!
