I have a problem with a speeding 17 year old daughter. I just finished repairing here car and installing a chin spoiler and black out panel and now it looks like she had to test it out. I received a call this morning from the police that stating that she was stopped last night for excessive speed, like 107 in a 55. The officer elected not to write her a ticket as this would have meant her loosing her license, maybe to the age of 19, our insurance going up to maybe triple or more to what it is now, and maybe even her spending a couple weeks in jail. I "think" I am grateful for his action, but other than taking her car (which is done) for a month or two, I'm interested in capping her speed at say 60, before she gets her car back. So my question is, what is available, where do I find it, and how soon can I get it here? She's in a heap of trouble when she gets home from school. And to let you guys know, I told the officer if he ever sees her doing this again, to take her but in, lock her butt up and give us a call when she gets out. This really pisses me off.

Wow, in surprised the cop let her off. Did he have her on radar?

Take away the mustang and buy her a used geo metro. She won't get over 65 ever again . That should teach her. Lol

when i was 16 i was pulled over for 105 in a 55 zone, I was fined over 400$ and my license was taken for 4 months then a 2 month probation driving with only a gaurdian :hs-That changed my driving to this day... Not having the freedom to drive changes a person.....

Do what my parents did. Get a ticket, you're paying your own insurance. Let's just say, they didn't pay my insurance very long! That was what slowed me down. It was tough to pay for the car, gas AND insurance.

Who's paying for the car, you or her?

Agreed. My parents covered me till the first ticket...which wasn't long. I paid the attorney fee to get it reduced and had to pay my insurance. Don't know your daughter but the best way to hit 'em is make 'em pay for it. And by all means if you're making a pmt on her car, she gets that also.

If she has to have a car for school, I like the Geo Metro suggestion. Not going to fast in that. Or, if safety is a concern, buy her an old non-turbo Volvo 240. A brick with a four banger.

As far as speed governors, I know busses and trucks have them, but a google only shows this for cars:

I'd bet the Volvo is cheaper.

Wow, 107 is really bad. Is she driving an old car? If so, I'd not let her drive the Mustang for a looong time, and not just for the ticket issue. If that is how she drives, I'd be concerned about what will happen in the (inevitable?) accident. Vintage cars do not have crumple zones, airbags, door intrusion beams, ABS, 3-point belts, etc. If she's driving a newer car, there is still the issue of her being in an accident and injuring some innocent party.

The car was a favorite (!) penalty flag to pull out from under them when my daughters were home. 30 days is too light, IMHO.

How about having her take a in-car driver training series again?

IIRC she has a newer Stang but still could get hurt or killed if she hit something at 107.
I had to buy my first car and pay my own gas and insurance because I didn't "NEED" a car, I wanted one. Paying out of pocket does make you think if your smart. My (now 21) oldest son hasn't yet learned even though he is out on his own now. He is still making bad decisions.

Electronic governor would be what I would look into. I thought I read somewhere the newer mustangs had such capability built in from the factory. Not sure on your daughter's mustang vintage.

On a side note, I sure wish the cop who ticketed my son would have done the same. We have what I hope to be his last court date in a couple weeks.

You might look into the valet key if your car has it. The valet key/My Key system in newer ones can limit top end to 80 mph I believe.

I like the Geo Metro idea but add a governor on that too.....

Not a Vintage Stang....but WAY too fast !!

Is she repentant about it? Or its no big deal attitide?

Show her NTSB videos of head-ons. Or look for high speed accident reports on the web.
Maybe shock is the way to go.

The problem is she is 17. She's going to do 107 regardless of what kind of car she's driving. If everyone remembers what it's like to be 17, you think you're invisible without realizing that you think that way. I had to pay my own gas and insurance as soon as I got my license (didn't have my own car) but it didn't stop me from driving like an idiot. The only thing that kept me from getting into serious trouble was dumb luck. I would probably not let her drive for a while and when she does, make damn sure she's paying her own bills. And she should probably not be driving a Mustang.

Loss of driving privileges, if that's an option, would certainly drive the point home (although probably more effective on sons than daughters).

As a high schooler, my license was suspended after 5 tickets. I was required to watch traffic accident films and retake my driving license test. I soon learned it also required an attitude adjustment on my part or the troopers would keep failing me--only had one ticket since and that was 30 years later.

The "Speedlimitersusa" was one of the first things that showed up when googled and I plan on giving them a call in the AM. I stopped at the Ford dealership today and learned there is no "Valet" key offered for an 08, it's only available on the 10's and up (Focus and Mustang for sure). The officer that stopped her is a old friend that I grew up with and tutored years ago. He told me he gave her a good a** chewing ,that she was polite and well mannered, but I'm afraid that it only went in one ear and out the other. This past weekend they were four teenagers killed in an auto accident involving high speed in a neighbouring town and told her that yes, this can happen to you. I could never imagine the pain those families are going through. I don't plan on giving her car back until there is some type of speed limiter installed and her "grounded" time is up. I thank you guys for your comments and suggestions and I'll keep you informed.

I understand your frustration, I have 2 teenagers. In my opinion her attitude toward the incident would be the deciding factor for me. If she is remorseful & you truly believe her I wold give another chance, with restrictions of your choice.

The governor ID is not bad I seriously considered this when my oldest started driving but we did not have a problem to warrant it. I do not know who your insurance company is but you might enquirer to see if they have such a device. There is also the option of an SCT programmer, the person that sets it up can build you a custom speed limited option.

I bet someone who tunes mustangs can introduce a lower speed limiter.

There are dongles out there that plug into the obd2 connector that can text/call you when the car exceeds a preset speed or perimeter.

Our Lexus store in Vegas uses such a device on loaners. They can shut the car down at will.

I can see what product it is if you like.

I thought about SCT but I need to learn more and make sure they will limit speed without limiting torque. We sorta have a bad place to pull out of and sometimes you have to hit it. If anyone knows please chime in.

I know this may sound a little harsh, strange, cold or even totally F'd up, but I have one suggestion that may turn a tragedy into a meaning something.

Since you stated four teens just died in a nearby town due to a speed related accident, see about contacting one of the families. It's pretty recent for the services to have been held, though time is ticking. I would explain what your daughter did and ask if she could speak with them, in person, and/or attend the service. Let her see the true potential cost of actions such as hers . I think if you approach it right, it could help turn the tragic loss of a young person into a teaching experience to prevent someone else from doing the same thing. Generally families are pretty receptive to things like this in order to help avoid similar loss to others. Pictures, movies, reports of these incidents don't have near the impact as personal contact with the surviving family and friends left behind!
