Its been a good run

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Urban Meyer, who was admitted to a hospital because of chest pains following the Southeastern Conference championship game, is stepping down because of health concerns.

Meyer resigned Saturday, calling it quits after five seasons in Gainesville and two national titles. He goes into the bowl game with a 56-10 record at Florida that includes a 32-8 mark in league play and a school-record 22-game winning streak ended early this month against Alabama.

That's what happens when you let yourself go. Current health problems (chest pains, fatigue), past health problems (brain tumor) just don't go away when you keep yourself running at such a high stress level.

It's fan driven, we expect (right or wrong) Gators to be at the top now and anything less than a blowout isn't considered a "real" win. Now me, I still expect them to falter, too much in the past to deny that :ecit

Sad to see him go, but understand.......but hey, it's "only" college football right!

I thought maybe it was a broken heart since Timmy is moving on to the big leagues. NFL in Meyers future maybe?

I just hope he's for real on this and everything sounds like it is. I never understood the "announcement before a bowl game" thing. Always reminds me of Mack Brown at UNC. That's when I lost any respect I had for that man. Hopefully there is nothing like this in play and he'll get the time he needs to R&R. Can't blame him at all if this is the case.

Can't fault the guy if he's walking away...at least he knows when to quit! I don't see the Gators being at the top in the next couple of years, with or without UM. The "Urban Renewal" has been accomplished, but it will be tough to keep it up there.

A leave of absence for Meyer

Florida Coach Urban Meyer changed his mind Sunday and said he was taking an indefinite leave of absence instead of resigning. Despite continuing concerns about his health, he expects to be on the sideline leading the Gators when next season opens.

"I do in my gut believe that will happen," Meyer said at a Sugar Bowl news conference in New Orleans.

Offensive coordinator Steve Addazio will run the team during Meyer's absence, but Meyer will be the coach against No. 4 Cincinnati on New Year's Day.

"It's full speed ahead. We're going to do everything possible to win this game," he said.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Meyer stunned all of college football, saying he was resigning because of health concerns, leaving the school after five seasons and two national titles.

But that was not to be the final decision after all.

Earlier in the week, university President Bernie Machen offered and encouraged Meyer to take a leave of absence instead of just leaving. After conferring with his wife and three children and Athletic Director Jeremy Foley, Meyer pulled back and said he was accepting that offer instead "to improve my health."

The 45-year-old Meyer said being with his players at a "spirited practice" Sunday morning persuaded him not to resign.

"To not try would not be the right thing to do," he said.

Still, his health concerns remain.

After the Southeastern Conference championship game three weeks ago, Meyer spent several hours at a Gainesville, Fla., hospital because of chest pains.

Meyer said he had experienced similar problems at times this season but had not had a heart attack. However, he would not elaborate on his physical condition. Asked if doctors advised him to stop coaching, Meyer again declined to answer.

Foley said that when he went to bed Saturday night, he did not think there was any chance Meyer would change his mind.

"It was a long night for everybody in Gator nation," Foley said.
