Home electric rates going up

Anybody else see a dramatic increase in electric rates recently?

Here in VA with Dominion we have a program that averages your last 12 electric bills and that is what you pay monthly (more predictable billing).

The neighbor was complaining to SWMBO about her electric bill a couple days ago.

We got ours today, bill went up from $186 to $251. That's a 35% increase!! Apparently there was also a letter that came out recently from Dominion warning us about the pending increase.

Perhaps all those empty homes around here are driving down the utilities cash flow.

I might have to repost this topic in the password protected forum so I can say how I really feel about this.

Hi Sig, our rates up here in PA. just increased 30% due to expiring rate caps. Sucks!!! :cry. BTW, I lived in VA-Beach for 16 yrs before moving up here. Lived in Kempsville (right next to the golf course on Princess Anne). Pics I have seen of yours look like Thalia or Kings Grant maybe? Now go turn some lights off!!! Kip

That's funny. Every house build between about 75 and 85 looks the same all over the city, eh?

I'm off London Bridge, near the back gate to Oceana.

Your quite right!! You need to come up with something that converts jet noise to energy and you would be all set!!! LOL

I can't say what I am thinking in the part of the forum!

The knuckleheads want to build a wind farm near my house and scare our wildlife, make noise and look ugly. Not only that but the energy is not cheaper from those POS things.

Oh and about caps expiring, you would have had gentle raises and probably not boticed it if there had not been caps!

Did anyone really believe that the existing power producing companies would let any alternate form of energy company waltz in this country and shut them down? If wind energy would cost 1/3 of the convential production costs of electricity I would bet you would see no decrease in the cost to the publc. They would either buy them out or lobby for Government intervention.

Wait till they pass crap and trade...rates are sure to spike up then.

I haven't noticed if mine went up the last couple of months but now I am curious and must go look when I get a chance.

The first thing I am going to do to the house when the other crap is paid off, is put in solar panels! I wanted them when we built, but we already got caught in the Katrina spike in building materials.

Thats exactly what I'm gonna do when we move further out. Just have to sell this house, that's gonna be a slight problem right now.

Whew...I just got my bill today and was shocked by the increase. Yep, that cap and trade crap is gonna cost us lots.

First thing I'm going to do is add a layer of R-30 in the attic.

Then new doors (can feel the draft around it, and even the door itself is not energy efficient).

After that house-wrap, .5-1" foamboard and new siding (30 year old house).

I have most of that stuff already. I could use a new front door, the cabinet maker F'd it up!

Good idea though. I would also get some great stuff and use it for it's intended use...spray it around your wall sockets and get a gasket between the wall and cover. Believe it or not that really helps.

If you have Great Stuff in your car, and your car is in the garage, does it help with the heating bill?

Yes..... but only under certain conditions. All building windows/doors must be closed, the car's engine must be running.... and you must fall alseep in the garage for an hour or so.

You'll NEVER complain about the electric bill again, trust me!

In my best german accent, which is very good by the way, "You vil need a shower, Breaz deeply you vil not need a towel!"

Sorry, prison humor here! Heck you can't spend 17.5 years there and not pick it up!

I think the way things played out that they must have been some serious payoffs given to our (ha ha) represenatives to allow the electric companys to raise their income by an advarage of 30%. Its not like theres any competition, right. I hope Mr. Morris sleeps well and stays warm tonight while the eledry try to decide to keep warm or have something to eat. Oh yeh, can someone tell me where the hell "Global Warming" is taking place, I would love to move there.

Imperial Valley, CA, Yuma. AZ, San diego, CA, Florida...How's that.

The price you pay for warm winters is hot summers in many places. I like my four seasons thank you. When I lived in the Imperial Valley, it was 70 degrees on Christmas day, sometimes hotter. But in the summer, it was 120-130. so my AC bills were 300-400 a month. But in the winter if I went over 50 for electricity and gas I was lucky. My gas bill for the dryer, stove, and water heater in the summer would be $5....

Now in Utah my highest electric bill is about 150 for one month and my gas bill is around $20. My total yearly utilities is less than half of what it was in the warm part of CA.

So, the grass isn't greener, but it can be green or white depending on where you live.

Now the elderly, well the reps figure they can eat cat food, wait that crap is expensive, they'll have to eat Ol' Roy in water.

I have looked into a ground source heat system and also at wind turbines.

The problem is that the cost to implement these systems has such a long pay off it really isn't usually worth it.

Well I'm not sold on Al's big idea, since it appears to be happening on mars (could it only be the sun getting warmer?). No cows, no cars, no us but the ice caps have receded by 300 miles, so they smart guys say. On the Geo systems, considering the fact that the electric rates are jumping by 10 to 30% a wack, it takes less time to recover your additional investment for a Geo system as compared to the standard Air to Air. I installed a Geo and have been very pleased. MY winter heating bill is about half compared to my neibours who has about the same square footage (actually I have a few thousand more). In new construction its a no-brainer however changing an existing system is costly.
