How do I get rid of an icon from my desktop?

When I downloaded my tax return (PDF file) I have an extra icon on my desktop and It will not let me delete it. It says; Cannot delete file:Cannot read from the source file or disk.

I know that it CAN be deleted, but I cannot figure out how, any ideas?

Delete the program, not the icon. It may be required part of the tax program and will go when the tax is gone.

What is the icon? Is it the PDF file? What happens if you double click on said icon?

These questions may sound simple, but they could affect what's going on here.

Under properties it says it's a "file"

No, it's not a PDF and I can't change it to a PDF or any other type of file. The real tax return IS a PDF file and it opens fine, this thing is like a ghost file that has the same name , but without the extension.

Clicking to open pops up the window that asks what to use to open it, whatever I try it does not work.

See if you can possibly rename the file (Right Click->Rename) If you pull that off, you MIGHT be able to then delete the file.

If it won't let you rename, you could try opening this file in Notepad (When Windows asks you what to open it with, choose notepad) If anything comes up in NotePad (probably garbage, if anything) delete it all, and just type something simple. Save the file. Close Notepad THEN delete it.

Very weird, man.

I tried renaming the file and it locks up and will not let me do anything else. Just keeps coming up with the same window; can't delete........ I close that window and it pops back up. Can't do anything else, have to re-start.

This is the same type of PDF file I've received from the CPA for 3 years, no problems before.

It may not go away until you delete the tax file. I had that on another program. I noticed the extra icon left when I deleted the new program when I was done with it. Get your taxes done and delete things from there.

What about going back to an earlier system restore point. Have you tried that yet?

No, it's been sitting there for a couple of weeks, I wouldn't want to lose all the work I've done since then and I really don't feel like backing it all up first.

You've got yourself a humdinger there, Mark!

If I was across town I'd offer to drive over and take a look, but Kansas is a bit far for me. :(

I am far from a computer genius but I can tell you that you don't lose any work you have done as far as Office type documents, etc. This just restores the operating system(s) to the way they were at such a date. It also works (I can't tell you why) to "detach" certain virus type programs to the point you can then ditch them with anti-viral programs. Ask me how I learned that one. Maybe one of the computer types can explain better than I.
