how heavy is a C4? Can it be removed w/o a trans jack?

I'm helping "67 resto-coupe" remove his C4 and just in case the trans jack will not fit, can the C4 be removed w/o being Arnold Schwartznegger? How heavy is the trans? I've dropped a couple of manual trans' before but not an auto.

Thanks.

I removed my ultra heavy FMX with just a standard hydraulic floor jack and a 2x12 board to distribute the loads on the trans pan. Worked out just fine for me but getting the weight distribution somewhat even is a bit tricky. You are probably looking at around 150lbs with the converter

Nah, it's got to be way less than 150. I've pulled C4's without a jack.... installed them by lifting them off of my chest bench press style.... and grabbed the bell in one hand and the tailshaft in the other and muscled them up into the back of a truck before. If they weighed 150 that wouldn't have been happening. I'm guessing 105-115.

FMX's are whole different story with their darn cast iron cases.

I moved a couple C4's when cleaning out my mom's shed last week and, even at 51, had no trouble lifting them into the truck, sans converter. They can't weigh over 100lbs. That said, when installing one, everything has to align and fit and it's an awkward job. I use a wide saddle floor jack with a piece of 3/4" plywood on top which mimics the pan size. Put many a C4 into my own and other vehicles that way by myself with no issues.

If there's room, definitely use a jack... I've used a floor jack (nice old Heine Werner) since I was 17 to get transmissions in and out.
If there isn't room... you're not gonna get it out anyway! I usually slide the tranny in, then use a 2x4 to lift it enough to get it on the jack.

They are 110lbs without the converter. The converter itself is roughly 35-40lbs or so.

When I put my C4 in a couple of weeks ago I had a trans jack sitting in the back of my Explorer but never took it out of the box. I returned it.

My buddy and I just used a piece of wood and a floor jack.

Good thing to, we would have never gotten the C4 out from under the car or the new one under it if we had used a transmission jack. We had it up high as we dared go on my jack stands and just sliding the C4 on the ground it barely cleared the steering components by fractions of an inch. Add a 7 inch or more jack to that and it would not have come out.

They're not "that heavy" but I was sure happy to have an extra set of hands helping out.

time for me to get clever.....i should've read that last post before i attempted to pull the trans....now it's out, but it's on the jack adapter and now it's too high to roll out from under the car! i think i may put a skateboard behind the jack and try to push the trans onto the skateboard....wish me luck.

I had a similar situation with my FMX. I had the 2x12 between the jack and the trans, so I took ratchet straps and strapped the trans down to the FMX real nice, then just slid the trans off the front of the jack onto the ground. Be sure to have a slick mess if you didn't think to drain the trans fluid :scar

If nothing else see if you can gently roll it over on it's side jack and all. Then you can take the jack off of it and slide it out.

Like I mentioned, they are not "that heavy" but an extra set of hands sure comes in handy for moving it around under the car.

Lift the car more and snake it out towards the front....been there, done that, got the shirt.....
