How Kansas celebrates Christmas (updated with more pics)

Woke up this morning to a nice white Christmas :eek:mg

The drifts in the back of the house were enough to block off the intake and exhaust for my gas furnace, which keeps it from running. We had the gas stove (similar to a wood stove without the mess) going last night, so didn't really notice it till this morning. Threw on the winter gear and went out with my trusty shovel and dug out under the back deck, it was only 9* and a wind chill of -15* so it wasn't too bad.

A few pics from around the house. Not much on the ground, it was all blown into drifts. I think I'll wait till tomorrow to start plowing the road!

Sounds like you need to build something to keep that from happening again. I'd rather have snow drifts then ice. We are in the middle of a huge Ice storm right now after 6 inches of wet snow this week. Its suppose to get real ugly today.

With all that property, besides the owls, do you have any animals mark? I see the empty pen.

Stay warm out there!

Re: How Kansas celebrates Christmas

I re worked the intake and exhaust pipes 2 yrs ago after a bad ice storm did the same thing. This is the first time snow drifted under the deck! I'd much rather have the snow than ice too.

We used to have horses, but Deb has been so busy the last few years it left me to care for them. I'm not a horse person, so she decided to give them to a rancher friend who uses them. One was a retired, one eye, paint, cut'n horse and the other was a miniature pinto rescue. They were fun to have around, but a lot of work. Now I lease the pastures out every year to my neighbor with cattle.

Those pictures sure bring back the memories of younger days growing up in Iowa and living in Kansas for a while. Fix the heater problem for sure and then enjoy the winters.

Holy hell! I was looking for shorts to wear yesterday! I think we had a winter hurricane! The weather was warm, probably mid 60's and windy with rain. I'm going ou to clean up the yard from the tree debris. But it sure beets having to use a shovel. :scar

Re: How Kansas celebrates Christmas

I will attempt later today to fire up the tractor and plow the drive. The drift in front of the garage grew overnight! We probably ended up with 8-12", but the grass is still showing. The wind has just piled it up.

Re: How Kansas celebrates Christmas

After 2 more inches last night, I'm pretty close to 12 on the ground. Wind has died down a little bit from the 30-40mph we've had the last 2 days. I've got drifts at least 36" deep in the back yard. Can just see to top pickets of our 54" tall fence.

I shoveled out the sidewalk yesterday - about 24-28" deep there. It's completely filled back in this morning, so I may have "walls" around the sidewalk after today that will be 48" high...

Th freaking snowplows BURIED the end of my driveway - 3 to 4 feet high with packed ice/snow. Will be a major challenge to clear that today...

Oh well, off to shoveling snow............ :pbj

Where's Jeremy?

Re: How Kansas celebrates Christmas

I think J's housebound work'n on the rat!

Re: How Kansas celebrates Christmas

Went out this morning at 9am ran the tractor till 3:30pm and hardly made a dent! My drive is a little over 1/4 mile and most of it was 3'+ drifts. I got the tractor stuck, pulled it out with the F250 then proceeded to bury the truck. Got that out with the tractor and said F it. Neighbor came by with his new Case and finally made a path wide enough to get a vehicle down. The Grader still has not made it down my road, so I'm still not sure I'm getting into town!

I tried bucketing it out, using the rear blade.....that little Ford just didn't have enough size and oomph. I even put chains on the front to no avail. Time for a bigger machine, Oh Ohh Ohhhh!

Here are a few more pics of my attempts to escape from housebound hell.

This was in front of the house and garage.

What? No pictures of the path to the outhouse? Surely that woulda been the first thing to clear of snow.

At least in that stuff, the Cruzer can't pass you, and you can't pass the Cruzer!

That's easy---have a couple beers, go out and clear a bit, have a few more beers, clear a little more...

I'm jealous! We went from a few inches on the ground to freezing rain and sleet. Most everything is gone now. I've got the sled registered and insured and waiting for some real snow!

Ryan, I remember when I was stationed at Griffiss AFB in the 70's. We had 4 ft. of snow on the ground each winter and enjoyed sleding thru all the farmers fields in Floyd. They would open their gates to ajoining fields and we could go for miles right from the back yard. They had some decent trails then also.

Paul, There is an awesome network of trials here now. Can get pretty much anywhere from my garage(granted the snow is good). We really haven't had a solid winter since 03 in Rome. Usually have to trailer to Ava before you can unload.... Have you been to Rome in the past 10-15 years? City took a big hit when the base left.

The last time we were up there was about 89 or 90. My oldest son wanted to see where he was born. Do they still have that fort in the middle of town?

Yeah, Fort Stanwix is still there. They built some sort of museum there to go along with it a few years back.

Mark,

Some observations......

1. You need a bigger tractor.

2. Your wife looks "paper thin", stop eating all of the food!

3. What mailbox? Is it at the end of that 1/4 mile long driveway/road?

3. What mailbox? Is it at the end of that 1/4 mile long driveway/road? yep, directly across from the water tower
