How to get rid of a racoon?

I have, what I, believe to be a raccoon coming into our garage through the cat door and eating the cat's food. It's an occasional event and again happened last night. How can I take care of the problem? Removing the food is only a temporary solution as the cat needs it during the night. Last summer we saw a family of three passing through our backyard. We are not in the sticks but a suburb of Sacramento with open fields, trees and a river not far away.

Poison? What type? Will our cat eat it too if left out?
Trap?
Hide in the garage all night with the shotgun? (This could be messy and discharge in the city limits is likely illegal plus the collateral dmg of whatever else the pellets hit in the garage is a potential problem.)

I would contain the cat inside the garage for a night, set the food inside a trap, and put the trap just outside the cat door with the cat door latched. Repeat as needed for the family.

I do like the idea of the shotgun though as it will send a warning to all other wildlife that you mean business.

I wouldn't use poison. The chance of your cat eating it is pretty good.

Live trap the sucker. We have tons of ground squirrel out where we are. I shot a few, but not enough to put a dent in the population. This spring we got a couple of live traps, and so far we've probably got 25-30 of the little suckers (if not more...I lost track somewhere around 20). Plus we've caught a few neighborhood cats. Talk about pissed of cats when you try and set 'em free!! Then dispose of the critter however you choose fit.

Once a raccoon discovers food supply, it will be tough to stop it unless you trap it. Then again what if the raccoon told his buddies?

But more importantly, how can the raccoon get into the garage? Do you have a cat door going from the garage to the outside? If so, that is your problem. I've been there, done that. We would wake up in the morning only to find the cat dish in the kitchen all trashed. Our cats are now strictly indoors thus we have closed off the one going to the outside for good.

Keep the cat inside for a few nights. Put out the bait, rig up a guillotine at the cat door and set up a video camera. You'll be the next viral video on youtube!

I've recently had a similar problem with a family of skunks getting into the cat's food.

Finally had to trap them and haul them off.

Caught the last baby skunk Saturday night and dropped him in the woods before church yesterday morning. Thus far, I've captured five baby skunks, one momma skunk and two possums.

You might want to find out for certain what's eating the food first. If it's a skunk, the trap I have that is made for skunks is much better than the old wire traps that could well result in getting sprayed.

Maybe set up a camera in the garage overnight....

OMG! WE have been dealing with racoons for a while up at our lakehome! We had an exterminator people that set up traps, caught 3 of them, but the racoons must have been heavily infested with fleas! The racoons were in a large place in our attic next to our fireplace, and the fleas just keep popping up in our living space despite bombs, fogging, soaking the attic and inside the home! I caught 9 fleas today, doesn't sound like a lot, but when you're trying to sell a 800k home, that's alot of fleas~ I go every other day to catch new fleas hatching etc. So, make sure they're not letting fleas off in your home!!

cat food . . I didn't think of that. When I was in Michigan, had a raccoon that climbed the ivy on the side of the house, clawed/gnawed a hole in the soffit underneath the eave. At night he would drive us crazy with his clawing in the dead space between the upstairs wall and roof line. Got a trap and baited it with everything I thought he would like, including salmon, but never caught him. Boarded up his entry hole, then cut an access hole in the closet wall to access the space where I heard the clawing. Got a flashlight and a pellet gun and went in after him. Lucky for me he wasn't home. Cut down all the ivy on the wall and $300 to a carpenter to repair the roof and soffit.

Yes, there's a cat door leading from the garage to the outside but there is not a cat door leading from the garage to inside house so whatever is out there cannot get inside.

As an aside, our stupid cat will not sleep all night inside the house and will therefore cry, yowl, bang/pry open the aluminum blinds and in general make a f****** nuisance of himself, waking my and SWMBO up until I let him outside. So, I made a cat door to the garage so the idiot will be outside at night and can get food as needed. Before I set out food, he'd often be on the roof outside our bedroom window, yowling. Oh yeah, I should add the PITA started out as our daughter's pet and now they are both away at college. If it was up to SWMBO, he'd go on a one-way ride 90 miles to San Francisco.

Dne, go to Wal Mart and get Enforcer flea spray. It has a red cap. It is pretty much what the exterminators use. Spray it a lot. It's not a bad idea to get some carpet spray also. The enforcer will not let them reproduce. That is the key. Spray it everyday. It will take a couple days maybe up to a week to get them completely gone. There are eggs that will continue to hatch and about the only thing you can do is get those sprayed with something that kills the reproductive organs. Been there, done that. We had a dog bring some in the basement and it was ridiculous. We freakin' sprayed everything WITH everything for two weeks. See one flea, bomb the whole house.

Tom you need to build something similar to the good old Squirrel Relocater aka the squirrelpult. If you do...videos would be required!!!

In Sacramento, you can call the Federal Trapper to come take care of it: 916-875-6603 You can call them 7:30-8:30am M-F

Sharon used their services before on some pests here. They either relocate or destroy the animal. (Some, like skunks, will ALWAYS come back, so they have to be destroyed.)
