Hurricane Irene

thanks Abe. Things are beginning to get a little nasty here and we are only supposed to get Tropical Storm winds here. Ole Sanborn is in the bullseye.

Somewhere on here Dave posted he was packing things and moving vehicles. And yes, I see him partying for sure.

Not too much going on on the weather channel although the possible scenarios they are describing sound intense.

As they always do...Thankfully they're wrong most of the time. But it makes for good TV talk.

Luckily it sounds like it will only be a strong category 1 storm.

Shouldn't be that big a deal unless you are in an area that has flooding issues.

Hoping for the best for all you right coasters.

One thing Irene has taught me is that I don't know jack about the geography of the east coast.

Well, not too bad here. Lots of limbs in the yard and the wind is still gusting pretty good, but very little rain. Probably the driest hurricane I've ever been a part of....................... Weird.

Were you on the dry side? I have to wonder if the rain fall wasn't worse on the "dirty" side.

I'm just about in the middle of the storm right now. I'm in Waterford, CT for my brother's wedding. We got the brunt of the storm early this morning. Th eye is almost to us, but it's still nasty here. 40-60mph winds. We're still expecting up to 6pm of rain by the end of the day.

My brother's wedding was at the Eugene o'niel theater campus, which is composed mostly of 40-100yr old buildings about half a mile back from the coast at the base of the town, which is built on a hill. Most of the younger idgits opted to stay and continue partying while the more sane evacuated to hotels uphill. Apparently everyone that stayed is ok, although I don't imagine it was any fun, and the entire campus is probably a river by now.

Anyway, Everyone is safe right now. We just need to find something to keep us occupied until the storm passes.

Well it seemed like there was a bit of an over reaction to this storm. The worst I saw was a little flooding. Until my parents called and said there was water in the basement. Thinking there was an inch or two I head over to help clean up. There was more like a foot. Luckily my parents didn't have much of anything important down there, I on the other hand had a lot of stuff. Like the full interior to one of the fastbacks. Wet seat, and door panels..... I also have a saturated set of drums that are probably ruined along with about a third of my Lionel train collection which I'm hoping I can dry out and clean up. A lot of ruined books, I lost a few tools. Its just another project to deal with now before I can get to the things I want to do. But it could always be worse. At least no one got hurt. The strange thing is in 20 years of my parents owning that house, they have never had water in the basement. I'm just not sure what was different this time.

probably more water than the sewer system could handle made the difference. Glad some wet stuff is all you have to deal with. That storm could have been a lot more serious.

That storm dropped more water on the north east than anything in the last 20 years. Apparently no place in NJ got less than about 7in of rain. So small wonder that the basement flooded.

Yes, there was a bit of an overreaction to what the storm ended up being, but it could have ended up being a lot worse as well.
