Hybrid Electric A/C compressor?

Okay, at the end of the Power Tour, I was talking with Jerry (Coleman) about my lack of A/C. One of my dilemmas is with the 429 there is not much room for a compressor. He suggested an electric one from a car such as a Prius and Larry said his wife's Ford hybrid had one as well. I love the idea, it wouldn't have to be under the hood even! So I started researching a little and found out the Toyota compressor runs off of 240 Volts and is heavily integrated into the computer controller. It seams that the hybrid compressor is made by DENSO http://www.globaldensoproducts.com/hvc/electric_compressor.html
So anyway, 240Volts is not an option nor is a complicated computer controller. What would it take to run a stock compressor? Is there a 12 Volt motor that could run a Sandon compressor?

Maybe the is a way to run it off the rear end or drive shaft?

yes that could work but not when I'm sitting still (which is when I need it most). On the tour the heat is not too bad when we are moving, just when sitting in traffic getting in and out of venues, small towns, etc.

If you could find the smallest unit and work the radiator into your front to use your engine fan or add a pusher this may be an idea:

If the unit is smaller (I'm sure 5K BTU is overkill) the inverter wouldn't need to be so big/ $$ I'm figuring.

Also stumbled across this, looks like 18 wheeler cabins may use electric AC units? If that's the case you might be able to part one from a salvage? Maybe find someone who services them to ask?

DIY put it in the backseat for the PT and add ice as you stop, cheapest quick fix that only needs to be in for hot trips then store it:

OR ( sorry -didn't have time to photoshop your car Craig)

Can you mount the compressor down low on the engine? Not all of them sit on top. Never seen an electric motor that could handle the power needs and still fit in the car reasonably.

What about an electric motor like the ones they use to turn a mechanical water pump?

I don't know the HP requirements of an AC compressor?

right now the ALT is on the right side down low, the fuel pump and remote oil filter are in the way on the left.

Toss the manual fuel pump for an electric and move the remote filter elsewhere. Should be able to make room for a compressor. They make some fairly small compressors now.

what about one of the gm pancake style compressors? i've seen some really small sanden style units recently, i'll keep my eye out ...

that might work

i'll ask pop tomorrow too. he was talking about some new small compressor he's going to put on that ls1 motor. supposed to be alot smaller than the stock unit. don't forget, if you do decide to put air on it, i have all the crimpers for making the hoses...
