hybrid water heaters

I have been peeking at the hybrid water heaters made by Rheem and GE. Anyone put one of these in their homes? I'd like to know how noisy the heat pump is - our water heater is in the garage near the laundry room and I need to know if it's going to be heard from inside the house when it's running......

I just looked up the GE one and it looks really great.

Unfortunately the price comparison at $1399 (Lowes) to a standard 50 gal heater at $299-399, puts this in line with just about every other hybrid technology. You pay more up front, and by the time it pays for itself in efficiency, its time to buy another one anyhow.

Exactly!

with the tax credit, I believe I'll pay for the unit within 5 years. I own a solar electric system and with the new water heater will be selling back electricity to Southern California Edison.

I was calling to see if anyone owns one and if they are satisfied or not...

We don't have those tax credits here in VA like you do in CA. I remember a few years ago when you put in that solar system. I'd love to do the same thing here, but economically the numbers don't work for me.
