Hydraulic clutch question

On my fastback, I installed a JMC hydraulic clutch, drove it for 73 miles then the motor died. I had a new engine built, reinstalled the T5Z and the clutch. I tried to drive the car but it would not go into gear on the ground, but I can go through all 5 gears and reverse when the front tires are on blocks and the rear in on jack stands. From their pics, I installed it correctly.

Could I have a binding issue with the reinstall? Or is there something else I should try? I don't think there is an air bubble in the line. I have tried talking to local shops but they don't want to do it for whatever reason.

2 things come to mind i also had helluva time tying to set up my cnc set up.
1.air in system
2. not enough pre-load

Is the rear axle hanging or are the jack stands under the axle? I am thinking the drive shaft is bound up.

GT... What did you do to set up the preload? It worked fine prior which is my confusion... no changed except for adding a lakewood bellhousing.

The rear axle is on the jack stands.

Did you have to dial in the lakewood bellhousing? I've heard that sometimes they are offcenter some and require the use of offset dowels to center it. That could cause the input shaft to be bound up some. Also aren't the 94-98 bellhousings deeper than the 87-93 ones. If you inadvertantly installed a deep bellhousing, that might be enough to jam up the driveshaft when the car is on the ground.

I don't believe there was a difference between the two bellhousings when I initially installed it. Unless someone can supply me with the dimensions of a ford t5 bellhousings to compare it again. I'll try and call Lakewood in the morning

when i got my car running and driving first time it was ok then a week later i couldnt engage gear they were crunching so i bled the system again gave it a tad more pre-load using the adjustable rod on the slave cyl to clutch fork i got from daze http://dazed.home.bresnan.net/test#3 and its been fine ever since.

In cases like this I always go back to my troubleshooting roots. For whatever reason, people always overlook the obvious. Typically, that means they just did something that caused the problem but they never think to blame that action.

In your case, it would seem the thing that changed was the new bellhousing. It is quite probable that this change resulted in a depth difference that you have not accounted for when setting up the clutch.

There is not a lot that could be to blame here so take a moment and go back over the work you have done, step by step, and you'll find your solution. That it worked before is your best clue.

So let me get this straight, with the suspension loaded and on jack stands you can shift into any gear you want. Then you lower the car to the ground and you cannot get the car into any gear (with clutch pedal pressed in)? If this is the case, the only thing that is different between the two is that the wheels cannot move when the car is on the ground. When you have the car on the stands and press in the clutch and put it into first does the tires spin with the clutch still pressed in??

When you installed the Lakewood...did you get a Lakewood for a T5 or for a classic mustang (a toploader)?

Buer,
You are correct. The tires only move once the car is in gear not when the clutch is pressed in. The lakewood bellhousing is for a T5 6 hole mating to a '89 302.

Will the tires rotate with the tranny in neutral and the clutch released? If so. rotate the tires and slowly press the clutch pedal. Somewhere along that time, it may bind up...shedding light on a possible problem.

I have no problem with moving the wheels in neutral.

I spoke to Lakewood and it is the correct bellhousing and the same size. Certain aspect of the bellhousing is different obviously.

I spoke to Day today and he is willing to help me out. I will find out the answers to his questions and will also relay what is discovered later tonight once I get home from work and the kids BB game.
