I saw more of this story today on the Today Show.

The kid driving claims that:
The cruise control wouldn't disengage
The brake pedal wouldn't even move
The emergency brake "didn't work"
The gear shift wouldn't budge
The ignition switch wouldn't turn at all

That is a simultaneous failure of multiple unrelated systems, some mechanical, some electronic. My BS needle is at full tilt high.

I dunno if he just wanted some attention, or hopes to sue ford, but I seriously doubt his telling of the events.

What's most incredible isn't that the kid tried to tell such whoppers, but that the news media gives it any credance at all :wtf

Biggest BS story of the year. When they came to a stop, why was the guys car not trying to move forward. If HE couldn't shut it off, what happened?

Way too many things not directly connected all failed :wtf

In seeing the reporting of this, it's obvious they're reporting from ignorance (BIG SHOCK!!)

Nobody has figured this out yet?

I think ford is being diplomatic (and probably trying to prevent litigation by speaking to soon) by refusing to comment. My dumb ass, if I worked at Ford, My statement would have been "Dude is full of $#1+"

I remember a story of a girl doing this a few years back, and she got all this media attention, so a little bit later she did it again. This time they pressed charges. My bet is they won't bother investigating and figuring out this kid was pulling a dangerous prank (The officer's car came within feet of hitting an innocent bystander's car) unless he does it again. If I was in the DA's office, I'd want to go after him with both guns blazing...1) it was dangerous, but more importantly, 2) He insulted everyone's intelligence with this ridiculous claims. Unfortunately, most people appear too dumb to realize they were insulted.

I bet I know what happened.. He's a dumbass and just didn't know how to turn cruise control off (cause its so difficult to step on the brake or hit OFF?) and since he didn't want to look like a complete moron, made up the story about how he had multiple system failures. :part

That's what I wondered. After the officer got it stopped, what did he do? Put it in park and jump out? WTF? If the gearshift won't budge, then there's a severe mechanical failure with the linkage. Getting the car to stop won't change that.

Here's why I suspect this is not the case. He was on the phone with 911 dispatch. They would have told him to hit the brakes, turn the ignition, put it out of gear, etc. I'd love to hear the 911 call from beginning to end.

This is full of B%llsh*t. There are several things that can shut off a cruise control .All these things don't work at that particular time ?????

I wonder why some people in the states have once in awhile such a " problem " with their cars .

Remember that dude in his Prius !! :steer

Never heard such a story in Europe. :rant

Or ........, those americans can't built a car properly !!! :stu

Because we don't throw the idiots in jail.

Some DMVs would give a license to a blind, retarded chimpanzee if it applied.

There's some folks out there driving and they don't even have sense enough to breathe without instructions.

I'm still a firm believer that anyone over the age of 70 needs to take a yearly driving & written exam.

Anyone who has a certain amount of traffic violations (2?3?4?) or accidents in a year should have their license suspended for 6 months and then be required to take the written & driving exam in order to get their license back. Each time their license gets suspended, the time its suspended for increases. If you reach 24 months of suspensions your license gets revoked, permanently.

I hate ignorant drivers. I can say that because I have a damn near perfect driving record. :part Not one single ticket since I've been driving. Not even a warning. Never even pulled over.. and I'm damn proud of that! :thu Only had 2 accidents and neither I was found at fault and one of them I got a nice settlement out of it.

I'm with you on requiring older drivers being required for more frequent driving tests. I also think the driving portion of testing (for everyone) needs to be expanded to more closely reflect how one would drive in the "real world".

Your idea about getting tougher on people with violations is a bit over the top. After you have driven 40k miles a year for a few years let's see how your driving record looks. Many people "live" on the road for their jobs. Covering multiple states as sales reps, etc. You spend enough hours behind the wheel traversing our highways you will get speeding tickets. That doesn't make you a bad driver or a hazard to others. You drive four and five times the amount as others and you are just that much more likely to get caught...because we all speed on the expressway.

I can't say my BS meter is pegged a full scale deflection because the needle swung so far the damn thing broke off! To have ANY semblance of truth to this story, I guess a rear tire on the Expedition sat there boiling out smoke as it continued to spin AFTER the police car got it stopped?!!! I think not! Guess the engine MIRACULOUSLY decided to go back to back to idle speed AND the shifter entered "park" all by themselves at that point! :confu

:wtf :wtf

The guy is full of crap. Probably trying get a settlement from the company hoping they wouldn't look into it.

There was a guy on my Volvo forum awhile ago claiming he flipped is c70 at 60 miles an hour and thought he was going to sue Volvo and they owed him. Nothing in his story made any sense and when people called him on it he just started telling everyone off. Volvo sent out a crash investigator and found nothing wrong with the car.
Everyone thinks they are entitled to something for nothing and they are never at fault.

This topic reminds me of that lady who burned herself with McDs hot coffee. I don't remember the whole story but seriously... the cup has a warning on it. Who would have thought hot coffee would be hot? :sarc

The warning on the cup is there BECAUSE of that lady, if I'm not mistaken. Prior to her there weren't such messages. You see, some of us need to be told that a hot drink is hot and to be careful. We owe her for pointing that out. :char

So warning labels are proof that idiots need instructions/explainations. Think about it.. warning labels are there because someone tried it. LOL

So, the next time I break bones while water skiing, I can just say I wasn't warned that it's dangerous and sue the Army C.O.E. (who built the lake), Mastercraft boats, Masterline ropes, BP (gas in boat) and Ford (truck that towed boat to lake).
