Damn I miss that lunch box. I used to keep my booger collection in that. I always had it with me. I left it at home one time and I found Fluffy trying to eat some of them. Bad kitty.

It's a Friday so I figured I'd make sure you were paying attention

That video is pretty freaking hysterical.

However, for the record...I train in Aikido which doesn't really involve all the kicks and things of that nature. It's more about using an attackers force against them to put them on the ground wondering what the hell just hit them. Something along these lines:

I chose that form over all the "belt factories" around here...things like TKD are not particularly practical in most real world situations because it would be few and far between that you'd find a mugger that wanted to stand back and spar with you. However, I'd switch to Krav Maga in a second if anyone around here was teaching it.

I like this video for some examples of the "real world" applications....

Cool stuff.
My dad is a 6th deg blackbelt in Shotokan. Done him pretty good too. He's now training with some of the military(can't remember which branch), and teaches the Columbus police dept in self defense, along with a few other police depts in MS.

I train with a guy that is now a black belt in Aikido but prior to that he trained in Shotokan for a number of years.

Actually, my Sensei started training when he was 11 or 12 in Kim Soo Karate and made it to third degree black belt in that prior to switching to Aikido.

One thing is certain, I learn a lot more than just Aikido on the mat most days because a lot of the folks I train with have a back ground in other forms.

From my experience, the "practice dummies" usually aren't as cooperative as those shown in the videos. Every time I've played around with the martial arts guys they always have the response "you wouldn't do that in real life, it's not a normal action to act/respond that way". WTF? Okay, tell me exactly how should I come at you so that this new move of yours will work?

You sure run into those kind Dave.

My Sensei actually worked in a juvenile detention center for several years when he got out of the Marines. He can tell you first hand Aikido worked well for him "in the real world" in that situation. He said when he was working there he had to use it pretty much every day. That was part of the reason he switched from karate to Aikido. If a prisoner tried to jump you and you sweep their leg or jab them in the throat, etc you are probably going to catch a case. But, if you use a joint lock to take them down and pin them then you are home free.
