I hate computers

SWMBO was complaining that her computer was acting up, but had a hard time describing it. I shrugged it off, but she said it was getting worse. OK...I know that although it has Mcafee on it, she's always downloading junk executables, which clogs up the OS.

OK...I take a look and the damn computer reboots by itself in just a couple of minutes. I try and run Mcafee to see if there are any viruses, and I can't get the program to run. In fact, every time the computer reboots, some of the programs that are in the start menu don't get started. I try to remove Mcafee so I can re-install a clean version, and I can't remove it...the OS reboots. I go into Safe Mode, but I can't remove anything. I try downloading Mcafee in Safe Mode (success!), but just as it is finishing its installation in normal mode, the computer reboots.

Time to get serious...I find out the problem is Page Faults in NonPage areas, which usually means bad memory. But...the computer was very stable in Safe Mode. I start wiping out unnecessary programs, and the computer reboots again. This time, it comes up with it unable to access the Internet. Damn...

I convinced myself that Wifey had corrupted the OS so badly that the only thing left to do was to start over. Fortunately, the computer has a facility to re-set itself to original factory loads, so I let it do its thing. Voila! It's been running for 5 hours now without a reboot. I had to spend 45 minutes upgrading IE 6.0 to 8.0 so I could download Mcafee (it won't work with IE 6!).

I think Wifey may have learned a lesson, and will stop downloading executables for a good week or so...time will tell.

So far, I've spent 7 hours today on the damn machine, and have another 1-2 hours more to go tomorrow. Ugh.

I hate computers!

My wife's HP is doing the same damn thing. I read somewhere that it is the latest of those little updates to the win7 program that is incompatible with the McAfee program. I did a restore to an earlier time but the mcafee is still not doing right. I am hating on the computers for the wifey also. I never have a damn problem. She gets on Facecrap and I think that is where this garbage comes from also. Good luck.

I just let my daughter give the wife's puter to an expert at her work.....$40 and a day later, all is well again. Good for about 15 months......

While researching my problems, I saw that the next to last Mcafee update had this problem. Go to their website and download the latest update.

I am running Norton Corporate Edition on my computers and System Mechanic. the combination appear to keep things fairly stable and prevent the lock ups and frustration you are experiencing.

I had 2 reboots yesterday while trying to run the printer (it had a door closed and sent a message to the computer which promptly freaked out). Today, Wifey says it rebooted twice: Page Fault in NonPaged Area. Not good...may be time to get her a new computer.

Take it to MBB, Duane has some "good stuff" to solve your problem.

Watch out Randy.....you're next. :sarc

Bought a new computer at WorstBuy tonite...actually a pretty good deal. I think I know what happened, as the saleslady explained her similar issues.

We have 4 cats and 2 dogs, and they all go into the Wifey's computer room. Methinks all of the pet dander has clogged up the filter on the air fan and some components have overheated (like permanently). The computer is 5 years old. Our house A/C unit has to be cleaned twice a year because of all of the hair...

Ugh. Pet fuzz. We've got 4 cats and a dog, and I have to clean my pc out every month. I even made filters for all the fans, still gets really nasty.

Got SWMBO's computer up and running this afternoon with little to no difficulties. It's a very nice machine: 1 TB, various card readers, DVD/CD read/writer, 20" flat monitor display, all for $600.

Hopefully, she'll be busy the next few days trying to figure out how Win7 differs from WinXP, adding bookmarks, etc., and I can work in peace out in the garage.

Good luck with THAT!

Dammit...she's already called me in to ask me how to adjust the brightness on the monitor. How do I know? I just started pressing buttons until I saw the adjustments...now why can't she do that?
