my newly acquired Expedition has been smelling like antifreeze. I didn't see any puddles but eventually I could see the leak around the crossover on the intake. I thought it would be a simple fix, new gasket or something. WRONG!
The crossover is bolted on from underneath and you can't get to the bolts. So the whole top of the motor had to come apart. Then when I pulled the crossover off, I found that the plastic intake was broken where the crossover attached. Fortunately Auto Zone had one but it was $250! Ouch. I changed a bunch of stuff while I had it all apart anyway. The antifreeze looked like rust. I flushed it out as best I could. I think I will drain it again later and see if it looks any better. The throttle body was nasty too, I cleaned that up and replaced the EGR. After a full day I did get it all back together.

I have been working on this pig every weekend. It had the CEL (check engine light) on since we bought it. The motor sounded good so I knew it was just some lack of maintenance. The alternator squeeled, bearings were tight. It would misfire under load, changed two coils, it gave a running lean fault, I changed all the injectors. Gave EGR fault - insufficient flow, so I changed the DPFE sensor (it tells the computer if the EGR is working. That fault came back so I changed the EGR, it still came back. I cleaned the throttle body and all the ports when I swapped the intake. Got rid of that fault then had a new one. P1131 O2 senser lean bank 1. I cleaned the MAF and so far no more CEL! I finally washed it.

after the trade and the extra money/work, I don't think I got such a good deal but this 5.4 with 4R100 trans will tow my camper better than the 4.6 F150. Now I'm gonna take it camping!!!
