As most of you know, there is ALWAYS something that uses up what little free time I have and prevents me from working on my car. Today it is the boy's truck. All of a sudden it stopped shifting automatically and required some throttle manipulation to get it to shift from first to second. I took it by a local trans shop and they put a scanner on it and took a test drive and reported the trans was shot and needed a rebuild. I didn't believe them. Not in a big hurry to hand over $2k either.
So I did a little internet surfing and came up with a couple probable causes of the issues and decided to rip into it today. Note to self: you are getting to old to be doing this crap laying on your back on a cold concrete floor!
Turns out there are multiple issues. Good news is it looks like I do not have to drop the trans to fix it. It will be a real pain to do without a lift but still better than pulling off the transfer case, etc. To start, the forward band anchor (46re trans) was found laying in the bottom of the pan. Nice. Fortunately, it seems this is the result of no one adjusting the band...probably ever. Looks like I can simply reassemble, make the correct adjustment, and that should fix that. While I am in there, I am also replacing all the electrical solenoids and components as well because I do not want to have to go back into it anytime soon.
