While poking around the local craigslist ads, I found a guy nearby selling a toploader and Hurst shifter. I emailed him for the tag code and he finally got back to me: HEH-T, a close ratio out of a 65 Mustang! I'm double checking to make sure it's the later bolt pattern. If so, I'm probably going to try to pick it up. The taller 1st won't really help me, but ohhh to have a close ratio 4sp!

And even if the syncros are trashed, I'm taking a m/t rebuild class right now where I can pull it apart and rebuild it.

Where are you taking a m/t rebuild class?
 
What's he asking?

I picked up a cr t-l last April that was completely rebuilt for $500 and LOVE it!!
 
The class is at my local JC, which has a top notch auto program.

He's asking $350, iirc. Ironically, he works at an auto shop 30min north that we used to do a lot of business with.
 
I'd snatch it for $300 or less and then get your practice rebuilding it!
 
Well, apparently it's a close ratio unit that was used in '65 K code cars, so it's probably worth some money. Now I'm debating running it or selling it for a good rebuilt wide ratio unit.
 
Just a thought: most close ratio TL's are not very street friendly, but are great on the track. If that is your primary use, then go for it. Otherwise, snatch it and sell it to someone who is mostly track-oriented.
 
Well, I picked up the tranny today. While it's not pretty on the outside, I expected it to be in worse shape internally. It's been sitting for a while, but the internals look great. The syncro rings and gears look good and everything shifts smoothly. I'll have my manual trans instructor take a look at it thursday and see what he thinks.

Despite popular opinion, I may throw this thing in and see how it does. If I don't like it, I can always pull it back out. I'll end up selling it eventually, in favor of a 5sp conversion, but if I like the way it works I'll probably keep it up until that point.
 
Ok, instructor agrees that the internals look very good. Shift forks don't appear to be worn, blocker teeth are all in good shape, and gear wear pattern is good. Shifts cleanly into all gears, including reverse. I'm going to replace the front and rear seals, and probably the rear bushing (if I can figure out how), and it should be ready to go.

The shifter is another matter. It was caked full of dirt and refused to go into reverse. I cleaned it, still nothing. Took it half apart, cleaned it a lot more, almost took it the rest of the way apart, tried it again...and it worked! Ish. Still notchy and not cooperative. I think most of the problem is that the linkage isn't adjusted properly and the linkage bushings are destroyed, but it does go into reverse now. I need to lube it up, adjust the linkage, and replace the bushings. Should be fine after that.
