I really need help sorting out what trunk part (or parts) this is..

OK, I have asked on a few forums and have yet to really get an answer about a rear trunk brace question. My 65 Fastback had a partial trunk rail installed, they cut the ends off and welded the new rail onto rusty ends.

It's these ends that have me confused, the original ends have folded ends that allow them to weld to the drop offs, the new parts for the hard top cars do not.

Here is the end of my original rail, I have circled and highlighted the bent ends that I am talking about.

Here is the obvious choice for a replacement unit, the Dynacorn PN 3649G.

Do I need to buy additional ends for this rail that allow me to have the folded ends that weld to the drop offs?

Here is the convertible PN 3649Z, interestingly it looks more like the rail in my car?

I need to get this part or parts sorted and ordered so I can get this trunk rebuilt with new rails etc.. I have everything but did not know this rail was this bad until last night.

Are you working on a fastback not a conv. Go with the one that matches what you have. I just replaced one on a 67 fastback with a Dynacorn panel and it had the flanges. Rich.

Thank you both, I asked on two other forums and nobody would give me that info!

I will order the RTB and get on with it, this could get messy, I am going to try to change the floors on both sides, the frame ends and that rear rail, do you think I should just bite the bullet and take off the tail light panel?.

I just ordered RTB from CJ Pony a month ago or so and the tabs are on it

I didn't. I've been at it off and on for a year, but I did each part one at a time, so I could keep fitting the new things to the old so I was sure they'd fit.I first carefully removed the cross brace, keeping it as intact as possible. Then placed the new brace, drilling and bolting it to the frame rails and through the floors to the bumper brackets, and into the trunk drop-offs at those flanges you asked about. Once that was done, I marked the rails on the new brace, and removed it. Then starting on the right side, drilled the spot welds for the frame rail, figured where to cut it and removed it.placed the new rail, bolting it into place, then put the brace back in, bolted the new rail to it where the old one was, then welded the rail. Then removed the floor, leaving the quarter in place for fitment, fitted up the floor and welded it. some wheel house work was required also, I did that before everything else, so I could fit the house patch to the existing floor and quarter, so later the new floor could be fit to the patch so the new floor would be sure to be in the same place the old was. And etc., etc, one piece at a time. I'm not done yet, and just discovered that the quarter patches I had done professionally years ago were not placed properly, so I'm going to have to replace those. I hope it doesn't affect what I've done, because what's welded in is there to stay, I don't screw around with plug welds only, everything is lapped, plug welded, and solid welded on the edges.
I've taken a ton of pictures I hope to post some day, but in the meantime if you want to see something just ask and I may be able to help.

Some great info here, thanks gang. This forum really bailed me out! Once I start getting progress pics I will start a thread in bodywork.

Great info guys. I've got this to do also. I plan to replace both drop offs at that time also. I'll be watching for some pics.

Coupe,
Glad to see that we.....er others of this forum were able to help you. Do you have to replace your trunk drop off's as well? And when can we start calling you fastback?

Yes everything is getting changed, I'm going to do the rear rails, trunk floors and drop offs, rear rail, and use a patch panel in front of the tank (transition edge) and also I am going to patch the wheel houses. The drivers side took the bunt of the damage, once a hole came in the wheel house the rest died a quick death and was covered every few years by goo.

I want the trunk to look really proper, and the underside to be clean. As soon as I get this done I am doing a one piece floor pan, but thats another thread.

<----- I need the admin to change my name from Coupe to Fastback.... :thu

Can't wait to see the thread as it looks like I will be doing the same.
